Amidst all the creative ideas, my favorite was always something called
"Phil Wood Waterproof Grease" sold in finer bicycle stores. I wasn't
sure if this implied that Phil Wood also made non-waterproof grease,
but the grease he did make seemed to last for a few years when smeared
on all the plastic washers and packed into the brass sleave-bearing
before reassembling.

That's why I use silicone lube, it's perfectly safe for rubber and
plastics. In fact that's what it's designed for. I buy mine at
Canadian Tire and it's made by Motomaster.

Oh, boy. First the arguments over which thermal stuff is best,
now it's about the fan lube. Hmm, perhaps there is a market here
to tap? "Arctic Lube". ("Hot Lube" is another enterprise
altogether). ;-)

So you haven't had to open up that Ricoh 6200S at all?:-) I did and the
model shop stuff (LaBelle plastic compatible grease with Teflon) was just
the ticket. It's been useful on other occasions too, e.g. with all the
plastic engineering in many devices like laser printer mechanisms.

Nope. Never opened it. Why would I? (BTW, it's a 6201 - caddy
type, no beverage tray). I'm thinking of replacing it with a
Plextor DVD writer though. I'll run that one up the flag pole in
January and see how high the CFO flies.

The only such "mechanism" I've had to lube recently was the
(illegal) fan in my office. I just took the bearings home (no
chemical permit at work) and squirted them with WD40 and cleaned
the surfaces. Works like a champ. PC stuff I simply replace.
Most such widgets aren't intended to be maintained.

Likewise, my garage door opener finally crapped. It's going to be
*cold* replacing that beastie. It *works* when it's above
freezing, wouldn't you know. ...and we won't see the "above"
part for a few months yet.

That's what land-fills are for. Keep the economy strong; recycle
(ashes-to-ashes..., that is ;-). Lubing PC fans... Bah-humbug!

Yep, I feel like a dinosaur with my old Ricoh myself and it does not
enhance the backup experience - the new Plextor 708A (for ~$200. at
www.newegg.com) looks like a good attempted comeback from them following
the demise of SCSI CD-R/RWs but then again, it's probably a Sanyo or JLMS
(JVC Lite-On Manufacturing Systems) under the skin. I'm sure if the CFO
gets some appropriate (seasonal) offering in advance, the Plextor P.O. will
be a relatively minor formality.:-)

A dab of the above LaBelle's resolved a paper picker problem with a Lexmark
laser printer in the office recently. Sometimes being a hero is easy.:-P

Funny that - eh? Bugger Murphy!

Agree but at 5p.m. on Sunday and you know that Wal-Mart does not have that
particular item!!

Backup? Wazzat? ...don't need no steenkin' backup (and can't
afford it). Scarry!

Dunno what it is under the skin, but it's getting some good
reviews.

Well, duh! Why do you think the *January* thing is in there?!
If the CFO didn't spend too much and I nail it just right
(perhaps tactfully outspend...). Though, remember, she bought me
the S&W .357mag a few years ago. That's a tough come-back!

Hero? Not me. My job is to be un-noticed. ;-)

Indeed! It's even worse, since the lock is totally controlled by
the opener. I can leave the door open or closed. Closed is
locked, but even to me. Since we're expecting upwards of 24" of
snow in the next 12 hours (again) this isn't the best situation.

Uh, you don't have parts in your bin? Hell, I couldn't buy such
parts at 9:00 Monday morning. ...and here I thought you were a
Boy Scout! ;-)
