Hard Disk with a 3yr Warranty?

Clueless...the warranty length is the issue and the serial number does not
determine that but the ship date does!

If we want to be picky about it,

Warranty length is determined by serial number, as it
determines the retail/OEM/other status of the drive.

Purchase receipt determines start of warranty period.
Withoout receipt, warranty start date falls back to ship
date.
 
My Hiachi SATA has a Waranty of 3 years, i think it will need it as
well, fast though.

number, Seagate knows what day they shipped each drive on. So yes,by

It's not the date Seagate shipped but the date the distributor/retailer
shipped. So no you can't verify from Seagate and the serial number. A
drive that was sitting in the distributor's warehouse for 8 months still
gets the 5 year warranty from the date you bought it.
 
Can anyone let me know which Manufacturers offer 3yr warrantys on Hard
Disks, as my Maxtor is failing & it is only a 1yr warranty :( (run out
6months ago!!)

Have you bothered even LOOKING at Seagate's web site in the last,
oh, four years or so?

I ask this because, at
http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp , they have the
form to let you know how long the warranty period is FOR.

The tail end can be extended with a purchase receipt, true - but
still, you can go to their web site and verify FROM THE SERIAL NUMBER the
warranty period.

Then, if you go to
http://www.seagate.com/support/service/warranty.html - notice the following
text (cut and pasted from the web site) ... "Warranty begins on the date of
shipment by Seagate."

So - you are wrong on at least two counts here.

But don't worry - the first story in CRN was wrong on the "where
shipped from" part.

Oh - and for others? Even if the drive was shipped from Seagate
before 1 June 2004, if it was PURCHASED after 26 July 2004 (according to
Seagate), it ALSO gets the 5 year warranty. Exceptions are the EXTERNAL
drives ... no 5 year on them.

If the serial number is irrelevant, why does Seagate's online warranty
verification:

http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp

ask for only the model number (or part no.), country, and serial no.
to find the warranty expiration? You could try it by entering model
no. ST31600023A-RK (160GB 3.5" PATA), serial no. 3js3pt03, and country
United States.

Back when Quantum HD was separate from Maxtor, their standard 2-year
warranty included data recovery, or at least attempted recovery.
