Thanks, gram pappy & Tech Zero. I tried this and even restarted
mozilla. Still having problems posting. Same username & password,
and got the password manager to remember both. Set the server
settings so that login in required. I will have to do further
trouble-shooting. Unfortunately, I can't do so at the moment.
Appreciate your suggestions.

Here... While we're at it:

Gibson's server isn't tracable form the outside...
He turned that off long ago, back when it was used to DoS him.

Second, he did move his news server recently so it would be outside
his
network. Read "WELCOME to our new NEWS server" in GNF...

Then llnw.net is probably the provider on or under which he runs his
news server. Not being traceable from that point down could only be
controllable if llnw.net was his upstream provider. I can't trace into
the internal hosts at many networks but, at least, you do get to their
boundary.

Which makes perfict sense:

So now his local bandwith is via Vero, including his Web server, and
his News server is sitting in a comfy server rack eleswere... };8)

Unfortunatly Mozilla isn't happy with Steve's set-up. You need to set
it to "requires Atentication", and "Ask each time" instead.

That means it'll be an extra step post, but you can still post.

The server settings only have an option to "Always request authentication
when connecting to this server". That meaning sounds like it includes
both the switches you mentioned above. The switch is set.

That was the page I was following. In user.js (and previously prefs.js
while mozilla was not running), I added

user_pref("mail.server.server1.always_authenticate", true);

After starting mozilla, I do get prompted for user name and password,
and I ensure that I provide the same string for both (by copy and paste).
It still can't connect to the server for posting, but can for reading.
I even used the password manager to remember the username and password.

Looks like your using an older version of Thunderbird...

Several people on the GRC server have gotten v0.9 to work, so I my next
recomdation is to "Upgrade":

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/

I've downloaded this already, and will be installing it shortly here to
see how it works (replacing OE real soon).

Anyone know what's the deal with grc.com? I haven't been able to
connect to that server for days.

Fred

maybe he got hit by the brand-spanking-new super-leeto DR-Pepper-DoS.
i'm sure he'll write a "research paper" detailing his insights into this
new form of script kiddie attack. let the hysteria begin!

My sys admin just upgraded to mozilla 1.4 on solaris 8. It's suppose to
be thhe most recent prebuilt binary. I don't think I can ask for more.
I think it's time to let this one go. Thanks for all your suggestions.
