Not strictly true, the European method depends on mass as Art has clearly
stated. Mass is absolute, weight is variable (affected by temperature and
pressure).

Oh dear..miss our dozzils clarsses did we?

I have to admit I prefer letter size over A4, in terms of aesthetics,

Interesting point. I've never considered it before but on reflection
don't see how or why it would come into it as the difference isn't that
great. (I've still got a box of fan-fold tractor feed letter size paper
here - Getting A4 tractor feed was a bugger of a job due to the sprocket
sizes ;-)

spite of the lack of logic in sizing of multiples.

Photocopier zooming/shrinking being a prime advantage of the metric sizes
of course. Do US photocopiers still not have default zoom size buttons?
eg the rest of the world get A4-->A3, A5-->A4 and vice versa or two A5
side by side onto A4 etc with no fiddly messing resulting in large
margins or chopped off edges.

The US and, to a lesser extent, Canada, still are a large market share.
I think both size systems will be around for many years to come.

IIRC, the US Govt has or is standardising on A4 as are many business which
deal outside of US borders. It may not be as long as you think :-)
