Panda Software's programs are may be the best now.
They scan everything in real-time and can clean even the most infected
computer.

Even yesterday I had to clean an infected clent's computer who had Kaspersky
AV.
Kaspersky found 0 infected files.
Trend Micro online scan found nothing.
But Panda Platinum found 16 infections and successfully cleaned them.

Panda ^slows down^ the computer because needs more RAM or faster processor
because it scans EVERYTHING for infection.

Sorry, the machines in question were P4/3.2ghz, 1GB RAM, and do now show
the same slowness as when using Symantec Corp 10.

Panda is not scanning anything that the others don't also scan, it's not
a nice program - taking 20 minutes to uninstall on a virgin machine is
BS.

Not true - I've seen NAV pick up things that Panda missed, same with
Symantec Corp and SB versions. I've also noticed that Panda slows down
machines more than ANY OTHER AV product we've used anywhere.

...but please don't do it again :-)

You have to place a copywrite on your text if you don't want someone to
be able to copy/use it as their own. Usenet is nothing like the Press.

Hi-Please don't give me a hard time. I like NAV & have had it for years.
But everytime, for whatever reason, I've had to re-install it it's been a
nightmare! It does not matter what I do it never installs properly. My
PC
is a mess right now & am getting ready to upgrade with my XP Pro disc.
Have
removed all remnants of Symantec I could find.
Can someone PLEASE tell me of a good anti-virus program I can download
for around $50.00? Am going to need some protection right away & there
are
so many on the market I don't know who to trust. Thanks alot.

I use Cyberscrub. About $60 for a five-year subscription. Updates its
datebase quite frequently (automatically, if you want), not once a week. So
far, so good.

AVG! it's free... and it's very good!
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/112/lng/us/tpl/tpl01 you can pay for one too..
but this is a wonderful anti virus... Rainy

Have never had good luck with AVG. Plenty of people use it and love it so
have always want to try it. Whenever I install it, my systems have trouble
even booting. I guess it just doesn't like my mix of software or computer
configurations. :)

Currently using eTrust's EZAntivirus on some setups (not free). And Avast!,
which is free, on yet another. Both of those antivirus programs have been
good to me so far.

Many people use the free version of Grisoft's AVG without problems. Get it
from here [you have to scroll way down to the bottom of the page to find the
download button]: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2 . You also will
need a Firewall and there are many free one's. The best known is probably
Zone Alarm. Try the free ones before you spend money.

Grisoft is reasonable at protecting - I've seen people using IM programs
get a link in their pop-ups from IM, follow the link, and be compromised
while running AVG 7 and all updates for it. The users in the same house
running McAfee and Norton (or Symantec) didn't experience it.

Brother, I never expected so many responses! I don't quite know whether to
thank you all once again, or curse you for adding to my confusion. Of
course, I'll opt for a big THANKS.
I tried several of the suggested programs-one I could not even try since
I don't live in Europe-&, at first went with Panda. But, ultimately, decided
it was too strange. Unless I missed something, which is certainly within the
realm of possibility, it has to be operated only through internet access. I
want it on my desktop. Finally went with Avast & am pleased so far. You are
all very accomodating folks. Thanks! Alan

Harry,

Avast! does it for me. It's free to personal users, which is well inside
your budget <g>.

HTH Tony.

I have AVG Antivirus and Anti-spyware program recently and but I have an icon
that always pops up and says my firewall isnt working and the computer isnt
protected and when I go check on the little icon it tells me what to do and I
try to do it and it doesnt work and also says it outdated - how can something
new be outdated. And I cant upgrade my antivirus programs because it wont let
me. And ideas?

AVG puts out updated virus definitions almost everyday, you need to let it
update online.
