Just to be more precise, "free market" and "capitalism" are not
identical. Especially "state capitalism" which is what we have now,
with corporations licensed by the state to raise capital with limited
liability and in turn control markets by buying up politicians. State
capitalism is more akin to state socialism than any true free market.
That's a bit of a cynical view RSH, but basically true. Free market does
still exist in this country, but is sick. That which is broken on our free
market system can easily be fixed. Businesses are taxed to death, and
naturally seek any refuge from taxes they can to survive. It's not the fault
of the corporations, it's the fault of the people. The people bitch and
bellyache about this situation, but do nothing about it. So we get what we
deserve. Until we start voting free market advocates into office, we need to
sit down and shut up about the situation we made for ourselves.
In a truly free market, you'd have no corporations - only "companies"
as in the 1800's. And you could easily have freeware, voluntary
cooperation and "democracy" (whatever that is) in such a situation.
There's nothing I would like better than to see a flat tax. No more
corporations, no more tax loopholes, no more teams of fat corporate lawyers.
Everyone pays 10% whether you make 10K or a billion a year. Our companies
could breathe once more, and compete in the world markets. Our economy would
absolutely explode.
It won't happen soon though. The Congress does not want to relinquish their
power over the corporations.
Freeware is alive and well in the USA and the world. It isn't tied to the
standard business model.
