If you are trying to save money, then why do you want an Intel processor?

Because you have to look at cost of motherboards, also. Best bang-for-buck
in a BUDGET gaming rig at the moment is P4, because of the great selection
of cheap and powerful motherboards to run it on. Athlon 64 would be a
better choice for gaming, but to comply with a strict budget, P4 was a good
choice. -Dave

Besides which, the Athlon 64 wouldn't have fit into his strict budget. I
know, as I just went through the research to build a similar budget gaming
system. If it had been MY money, I'd have gone Athlon 64. But as I was
trying to keep the cost as low as possible, I couldn't justify the extra
expense for the athlon 64, when I knew the P4 2.8 I chose would make a more
than acceptable gaming rig. We all know the Athlon 64 is good for games,
and not too terribly expensive, all things considered. But when you look at
the total cost, it's not always the best choice, depending on your
udget. -Dave

What? How cheap? There are motherboard for the Athlon 64 for around $80.
There are motherboards for the Athlon XP for around $30.

Not quite. A P4 3.2 ghz wouldn't be bad for gaming, but it is around $275.
An Athlon 64 3000+is only around $160. Is it worth it to pay $115 more for
the processor to save around $35 on the motherboard? Of course one
could pick a slower P4, or they could choose an Athlon XP instead
of an Athlon 64. An Athlon XP2700+ is only around $100 for the retail box.
Imo it is a bad mistake to buy a 32 bit processor now, as imo 64 bit
will take off in less than a year.

It is the same price as the P4 2.8 ghz 533 that was proposed.

So would an Athlon XP2700+ or XP2800+.The P4 2.8 533 should be compared
to an Athlon XP2700+ or Athlon XP2800+.

Not quite.

Some people buy Ford, some idiots buy Chevy ;) ultimately they are both
good.
