Frontpage 2003 Tables

I have just installed FP 2003. The problem I ran into is inserting a table
or going to table properties. The popup for both are the same, and so
large that it does not fit the screen. I can barely see the top of the
buttons at the bottom of the popup even with the popup moved all the way to
the top of the screen. If I did not know where the buttons were, I could
not use it.

Is there anyway to resize this popup screen?

Unfortunately, no, you can't resize the Table Properties dialog box. It's
623 pixels tall, which is certainly a nuisance if your monitor resolution is
800x600 or less.

Don't tell me MS will release 2003 without fixing this? This was reported
from the beta 2 at least twice that I saw here. I thought roughly 1/2 of the
monitors now in use were using 800 by 600 resolution.

Brian,

The dialog is still this way in the release version. The dialog will work
fine unless you are using a resolution less than 800x600. At 800x600, you
will have to hide the task bar or nudge the dialog up to see the buttons.

I think all Web developers should be running at LEAST 1024x768. There are
MANY people running this resolution (and higher), and without testing in
that resolution at least, you may run into problems.

The "shipping" release of FrontPage 2003 has been available for
download by MSDN subscribers for about two weeks now, and the Table
Properties dialog box is 623 pixels tall. I suppose that the software
that shows up in stores could be different, but that's not likely.

Microsoft certainly could have rearranged the elements on this dialog
box to make it make the 570 pixels tall, and I personally wish they
had. But even if half the Web visitors in the world have 800x600
display systems, I suspect there aren't very many Web designers who
work at less than 1024x768.

The standard FrontPage window arrangement includes several toolbars at
the top, a row of tabs and a status bar at the bottom, the Folder list
at the left, and a task pane at the right. If you display all this on
an 800x600 video system, you're going to have a postage stamp sized
area for editing. And switching among FrontPage, a picture editor, and
a couple of browser windows will be a nightmare.

So really, any Web designer who runs his or her video system at
800x600 probably ought to be considering an upgrade for many reasons,
and not just because of the Table Properties dialog box.

As to cost, I just ran a quick check and found dozens of brand-new 17"
monitors, with display capabilities up to 1280x1024, for sale at less
than $125.

Ya know, some of us have a specific reason for using 800 x 600, like many
use even larger...it's called sight issues ;-)

Hi Brian,

It sure does seem that way. The retail version that I have remains. This
issue was know to MS prior to the FP3 TR release. I personally see no reason
that this anomaly reached the retail product.

As to cost, I just ran a quick check and found dozens of brand-new 17"
monitors, with display capabilities up to 1280x1024, for sale at less
than $125.

Jim,

I have a 17" monitor that will display
1660x1200.

I use it at 800x600 in everything that I
do so I can read the text.!!

I use a 17" monitor. If I use anything other than 800 by 600 I also have
trouble reading the text.

800 x 600 on a 17"? How many old fogeys are on this group?!?! :)

But seriously, I can't imagine working with that low of a resolution. I've
also got a two display setup with a 19 at 1280x960 and a 17 at 1024x768.

When I was writing my book, all screenshots had to be taken in an 800x600
resolution. I had no problems with the Tables dialog by simply auto-hiding
the task bar or just nudging the dialog up a bit to see the buttons.

It you absolutely must run at 800x600 (I agree that higher may be a stretch
on a 17" monitor for those with vision difficulties), this seems a small
price to pay for the immense functionality added in FP2003. :)

Jack,

I swear my eyesight is not that bad. If I make the text size "Larger" from
View, I can see the text below the views bar fine. But above it the text is
too small to read unless I lean in to read the screen. Is this something I
will just have to get used to?

Well, Jim, it's easy to second guess everyone else, I guess.

Brian,

Sorry, that was an off-topic reply and I wasn't very helpful.

Are you talking about text size in your browser, or FP, or something else?

I'm an old fogey with site issues. So, I misread your helpfull info ;-)

"Site" issues? :)

I agree that 800x600 is about as high as you can go if you have bad
eyesight, unless you go to a 19"+ monitor. Maybe Microsoft will bundle a
21" monitor with FrontPage. :)
