freeware newsgroup?

I've followed this newsgroup for several years now. It used to be a
productive area.

I've followed a lot of news groups. This is one of the best I have ever
followed. The people are very helpful, very sincere, and do less bitching
and fighting than any group I have followed.

Sure, some of us (GUILTY!) get involved in little brush fires, but they
don't last long.

When you have dozens of opinionated individuals, there is bound to be a
little friction. I prefer a little friction to a bunch of robots.

Where's that Freeware post you owe me?

I really don't know what your problem is with this newsgroup. I'm
following this group for some years now (I think I can be considered to
be one of the 'oldies' in here) and I can tell you from a lot of
experience in here, that it can be far worse, even more than you ever
can imagine....! Without pointing fingers at anyone there were
'never-ending' flame-wars about almost everything. When I look at this
group now, and compare it with the past, I must say that we almost must
be very happy with the way this group works. I sure hope that the 'old'
times NEVER come back (although there also were some very funny
moments) and that this group keeps growing in the way it is growing
now. And discussions about 'freeware' and 'open source' can be done
very well in here.

With kind regards,

He can't send it because Fussy's got it. Ceg has been acquired!

Correction: "you're," not "your."
"You're" is the contraction of "you are." "Your" is possessive.
It means something that Ceg owns.

Glad to be of service!

Hey, now you've gored my ox; he's not happy. OK. I'm wearing my
"serious hat" now. To me, the distinction of whether the software
is free or not is the essence of this usenet group. I feel that
it is important for posters to be very clear about this right up
front. We assume that what's recommended here is fully-functional
freeware. If not, we want to know that.

Please understand that I don't expect all software to be handed
to me free. People have worked very hard on their soft-wares,
especially if they've debugged it and done the numerous fixes
that are required to make the code boogie properly. Nobody can
contribute their hard work to us indefinitely without adequate
compensation. Submitting work into the public domain is a way to
advertise how good a person's product is and to create a
following: Karenware comes to mind immediately. I'm saying that
I'd like clarity from the get-go. The coder is, of course, free
to ask (but hopefull not nag) for contributions. One of my two
all-time great word processors was un-crippled shareware and I
have the deepest respect for the late programmer, Bob Wallace,
who gave us the wonderful PC-Write masterpiece. At some point, a
good program becomes almost a work of art in its elegance.

Go find us the best Freeware find of the month. There's only 2
days left! :)

Last month was super easy. Photofiltre. That's one who is looking to even
make it to Freeware Find of the Year.

This month? Even if you change it to Freeware of the Month, not making it
even have to be a new find, I am at a loss to come up with what program has
received the most praise this month, to then be candidate for that status.

Ideas? And yes, the deadline is in fast approach...

OK, now I know. It's Firefox that's received the most praise this month.
I therefore offer this list:

Freeware of the Month

2004, January: Photofiltre
2004, February: Firefox

.. . .

Speaking of Firefox, it was only yesterday that I got to reading all the
messages on it. I was ill-fated in my tardiness. I cannot obtain it from
the URL provided:

http://mozillanews.org/builds/firefox-0.8-win32.zip

Does anyone know where else I might get a copy of the no-install zip? Or
at least what might be the story on the failure with the one above?

You're online? It's not your hours. I thought I had until the morning to
post my reply to the started discussion about the CHM. In the meantime,
please note that I posted a new thread, and will watch to see if there
are objections.

I am still most concerned with your own feelings on it, since, whatever
you say about group property, it's you who assembled the content. And,
actualy, I am even almost hoping the chance you might like the files
a wee teeny bit. (how to make type an appeasing puppy-dog smiley)

I've found this:

http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?file=firefox-0.8-win32.zip&size=6307887&getright=1

(the first one from ftp.taubenschlag.uni-frankfurt.de works)

Thank you. I went ahead and got it from the URL bambam provided. Is
filemirrors.com good in general, when you have a filename for which
Google is not assisting? I've been meaning to compile a short list
of the best sites for this circumstance. Drawing from my shallow
memory, I think filesearching.com (?) was one of the right ones for
the list. Not sure for others...

You're welcome.

Well, I'm not much expert (I don't use it so often), anyway is
filemirrors.com what I use in these circumstances and so far it worked.
