Freeware is not adware and is not crippleware

ah, well.....all we can do is plead for reason...

You speak as though there will be some dire consequences if we aren't
reasonable in defining Freeware. Right now, I just can't imagine any
untoward consequences for holding steady on our present course.

The concept of "free" is one of those elusive qualities like beauty. It's
hard to define, but the average person knows it when they see it. :)

not exactly 'dire'...no one will die if categories are fuzzy and
excessively broad, but the group has already lost some knowlegable
people who liked a clearer, simpler definition...

and some of them 'average people' think Bob Dylan is 'folk', too!
;>)

we shall see what gets looked at & posted in the next couple of years.
I'll keep reading, even when I have to swallow hard.

Hmmm...

So Blowin' in the Wind, Tambourine Man, Master of War etc are not folk
songs?
I s'pose the folkie equivalent of the ACF purist is the one who thinks
the only real folk group is the Watersons :-)

Some of them are "purists", some of them "elitists".

the Bob Dylan stuff has some folk 'roots', and some of it is really
good, as is some 'limited' freeware....

the Watersons are 'in', like postcardware...now, the Copper Family and
Walter Pardon, and Almeda Riddle...there is TRUE
'traditional'...*grin*.....people who learned their music before it
was commercial & recorded.

yup..I am one of the resident 'purist snobs' at
http://www.mudcat.org/, the best place in the universe for discussing
folk music.

fortunately for the 'average people', the management there allows a
wider set of rules than I would...it all works out, just as it does
here for most of us...we argue and compare, and those who stay around
learn something.

Whaaaaat?

Like Woody has 'some folk roots', I s'pose?

But, but, but, but... grrrrrr... :-)

I saw Martin Carthy in a smoke filled UK pub 30 years ago; he broke a
string half way through a song and carried on, unfazed, while changing
it. Years later, as I became more cynical, I came to wonder if it might
be deliberate and was his 'string breaking number'.

Are we drifting off topic here?

off topic? yep...you oughta put http://www.mudcat.org/ on your list
and join the discussion there. Private messages, live chat, silliness,
serious music and non-music bickering....a real 'community' . It's
been going 8 years now.
(but I saw and spoke to Martin Carthy 1 1/2 years ago at Mystic,
Conn., and was MUCH impressed with his attitude and dedication, and I
doubt he'd break a string on purpose.) ...and Woody had one foot in
each world, and after 50 years has become 'mostly' tradidional....

so....back to 'purist' freeware talk here?
