Me too. I'm in the process of creating a new Ultimate Boot CD for
Windows. I'm curious as to whether xxcopy can work by booting from the
CD. I don't see any reason why it won't work, although I have not read
the forum. There might be some anti-piracy mechanism built into XP, so
that a bootable xxcopy will not work. I guess I'll find out...
You can "copy" all files with xxcopy, but it will not make a disk
bootable if you are using XP, as the registry is always alive and
changing. 98 will clone perfectly with either.
That is why you must use xxclone in order to clone a disk to make it
bootable with xp. Of course you must make it active after the clone.
The documentation for both xxcopy and xxclone is very comprehensive and
should be studied a bit before proceeding.

Good luck....

The booting from CD relieves the boot partition of activity. I'm
'thinking' that a simple /clone will copy the partition to another
successfully. activating it is no problem.

In case you aren't aware, a slim bootable XP GUI CD can be created
with Bart's PE Builder, and this is the key to the hypothesis...

Thanks for the feedbacvk.

karen, i found this on their front page:

"Note: You need to sign up for a Test Drive in order to visit the
betatest section of this web page which requires a log-in with a
password."

if you scroll down that front page you will find their "Test Drive
Request Form".

i'll wait until its not a beta , myself...

Maybe I'm missing something as the docs for XXCLONE are pretty slim but
it appears that XXCLONE requires another partition to make a sector by
sector copy of the active partition into. I'd like the ability to copy
everything from an active partition into a single file (or x files @ 2
gig each) on another location such as a ftp site, nfs mounted disk,
etc... Does XXCLONE do this or is there another program that will?

I have a backup with the above, but I've yet to restore with it. It
was abandoned by the author, who went on to write a similar program. I
emailed him, but got no response.

A bootable XP CD will be necessary for restore (as I understand it):

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ (base bootable CD)

By coincidence I have just made a BartPE disk with DrvimagerXP on. Seems to
work but is very slow especially if the compression option is chosen -
writes a backup file - then makes a zip of it, so make sure there is plenty
of room in the backup partition and make the backup 'chunks' a sensible size
.. Have'nt tried a restore yet as I am still experimenting.

The plugin for bartspe is already made and can be found at
