I presume =ISTEXT(A1) would produce True
and your format is to look like (888) 111-444
from format, cells, special, phone number which is an actual
format of [<=9999999]###-####;(###) ###-####
If you have a number format to start with and change the
number format then the formatting changes automatically
when you change the number format. It is when you change
the format from a text format to a number format or
vice versa that you have a problem when you change the format
that you have to reenter.
You can use F2 then Enter which is faster the reentering.
You can use a macro that reenters what is seen as value.
you can select an empty cell, Ctrl+C (to copy)
select the column or cells that you want reentered
Edit, Paste Special, Add
You can use a macro
Reenter the cell current cell content (#reenter)

You have posted your question to a newsgroup, and we're a
friendly bunch of people, my name is David McRitchie,
which you can see whether I add a signature line or not.
Will we answer questions from anonymous posters, yes,
most of the time, but it is a lot more friendly if you use your name.
