ARGH!!! Don't these people know anything about the things they sell!?

Can anyone tell me for certain:

1. Do inkjet printable CD-R discs exist that are plain silver on the
top (not white)?

2. Do inkjet printable DVD-R discs exist that are plain silver (not
white)?

Sure would be nice to hear from someone who knows what they're talking
about for a change! : )

Allan.

I've been buying these for my R300....Quite satisfactory!

Yes! I recently bought a 100-pack of Maxell printable CD-Rs from
Newegg. They are not shiny silver, but matte silver. Check here:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-910&depa=0

Those Maxell's are listed as 48x, but they burn at 52x flawlessly on
my Lite-On.

Sorry I can't answer that first hand. But Maxell claims to have even
a shiny silver printable DVD and Taiyo Yuden has silver matte, among
others. Check this Yahoo page:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/printabledvdr.html

Most shown are white, but there are certainly some silvers. Prices
aren't especially good at Yahoo, BTW.

HTH!

Oh - that durbrite stuff they go on about. Water resistant/proof
supposedly. The local store has a gimmic jar of water with an epson
print curled up inside to show the ink doesn't disolve in water.

Too late now, I bought the i965 today!

Allan.

I just put a photo done on my i9900 in a jar of water and then took it
out, shook the excess water off, and carefully blotted it dry.
Side-by-side with the same print not dipped you only see a difference
if you hold it this way and that and peer at it intently. The dye
certainly didn't run. You could happily still put it in an album
especially under plastic or under glass and no one would notice.
However, I don't know what would happen if I left it to soak for a
long period of time.

Now I'm *really* getting confused. I asked at the last computer
market, if they could get printable, silver CD-R discs. The asian
woman said, no, they don't make them - to just use printable DVD-R,
that they'd also work as CD-R discs. I pointed out that they looked
white, and she said it was just a plastic "blank" and the DVD-Rs
underneath that one were silver.

Then today's computer market, a different guy tells me the DVD-R discs
won't work as CD-Rs (for a normal music CD player) - and - no-one
makes silver printable CD-R discs - AND - no-one makes printable CD-R
at all. (Printable DVD only.) An Australian guy next to me at the
table chimed in and agreed with him.

Then I walk to the VERY NEXT table and find... Printable CD-R discs
(white) and a stack of the same printable DVDs that the first woman
said were silver and get told they really are white top after all.

Silver is for themo printers, suxh as Casio's. Most ink-jet printable CD/DVD
are white. They are not created equal and also depending on the kinds of
ink, so try one before buying in bulk.

How do the colours look on the silver printable DVD-Rs?

Inkjet printers can only get the colours right if you print on white paper, so I
don't see how the colours could look right.

To those who print directly on CD-Rs, do you have trouble with ink
smearing? I give folks lots of music CD-Rs that I'd like to print
directly on and not have them complain they touched it with wet
fingers, wiped it dry only to have the ink come off... Opinions?
Experiences?

Thanks for reading...

Allan.

I do not print directly to discs but one thing you could try is a
spray coating as I suggested to someone else. You can find it at any
store selling spray paints.

I use Krylon Preserve it on alot of my photos. It keeps you from
kringing when handing photos to kids.. It will at the least make it
fingerprint proof and easy to handle.

perhaps that may be all the protection you need. It wouldnt hurt to
try I suppose. For a general purpose spray, Hold the can about 10
inches away and spray with a farily rapid sweeping motion.

Apply several light layers instead of one heavy one if needed.
let dry a few seconds between layers. It may work out nicely

I'm sure that's true for shiny silver, but the matte silver Maxells I
bought work fine with my Epson R200 ink jet. I was a little
dissatisfied with my first effort since the result looked rather
"thin" (the design was somewhat washed out when I looked at it dead on
due to light reflection from the surface), but I found I had
overlooked a setting to correct that. Also, even the first one I
tried looked much better after I'd let it sit for a day — as Epson
suggests in the manual.

I can see a need for having printables with both types of surface,
depending on label design. The matte silver I bought are great when
I'm not using a background. But a white surface would clearly be
better if I wanted to use solid color or a design or picture as
background.

The matte silver does have some advantage here since it takes less ink
when there's no background printed. There's enough "personality" in
the matte silver surface to let it be the background. But the
starkness of a white surface would almost demand a printed background
of some sort.

| Thanks - I'll have a look... Do the plain silver ones have ANY
| writing on them at all (including no inner circle brand name etc.?)

I can answer that concerning the matte silver Maxell CD-Rs I bought.
There is a small white "Maxell" (about 10mm x 2mm) and an opposed "P"
(standing for "printable" I'm guessing) on the clear plastic inner
hub, along with the inevitable serial# or whatever that you'd need a
good magnifying glass to read. There's certainly nothing on any part
of the printable surface.

I make CDs for 3 working bands using 2 R300s,NO complaints regarding color
output on the TY silver or white with_Printable_Hubs. The bands actually
like the silver TYs better than the white TYs.MOF just bought 600 TY silver
and 200 TY white. With 2 new albums and reprints they'll be printed and sold
in a month by the bands. No I don't make any money these are my kids bands
mostly Rockabilly.

A white background would use more ink too. Correct?

Is it possible to print from any CD l;abeling software
to Epson R200 or we have to use what is supplied
by Epson?

Are there any printers other Epson capable of CD label printing?

I haven't tried it with my R200 yet, but Discus (a label design and
printing program) has entries for numerous disc printers (including the
R200) in its layout templates.

If you used a background, certainly.

SureThing Deluxe Edition's latest update (v.4.2.0146) supports direct
printing to CD/DVD, but that choice shows up only if there's a printer
connected that can handle direct-to-disk printing. I like it better
than the program Epson provides since SureThing is much more
versatile.

SureThing Deluxe Edition is $29.95. There is a free trial available.

There are some Canon models, but they don't seem to be sold in the US.
