Joe ...

I've been trying to get to the Web site for AVG using the link that you provided.

I get "unable to ..." messages/pages.

Do you have any other URL for this?

Many thanks!

Linda W.

Linda W,

Try the following link;

www.grisoft.com

Select "Download" from the upper right hand side of the page and on the
following page select "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition download."

Post back if that doesn't work.

Linda W,

Try the following link;

www.grisoft.com

Select "Download" from the upper right hand side of the page, then select

Have you ever tried a Google search "AVG" by yourself? It's very easy!

and please don't open a new subject in this case. THX.

gee, I may have to change my name, you get a lot more responses than I ever
would. Yet all of them are sound...

Hello ...

Actually, I can't even get www.grisoft.com to respond.

It says "This page cannot be displayed."

Do you have any suggestions how I might access this Web site?

Many thanks ...

Yes, I have tried that. Same thing happens.

I'll try a few of the others. It seems, though, that the ones I try
seem to eventually link to the AVG Web site, which doesn't seem to
want to open.

I'm not positive what you mean by this -- do you mean I shouldn't have
started this new subject line?

I apologize if I did something wrong by doing that. I had a
particular question in follow-up to something Joe G. had responded,
and I was concerned that people might not check back to the original
thread for something like that.

However, if I should have posted it there instead of starting a new
subject line, I really do apologize.

Tom ...

I've tried to link to this, but it doesn't seem to be a currenctly active link?

Thanks.

Linda, looks like there's something not quite right with your PC. At least
for me, every single link posted to this thread works just fine. As Dr.X
posted, have you checked your hosts file to see if it's been tampered with?

Dave

I hope you didn't mind the subject line.

I guess I shouldn't have started a new one. I do apologize if I shouldn't have.

Linda,
I just checked the link and it works for me.
I did see a quick flash of a box that said something about
a "cookie check" before it opened, do you by chance have
all cookies turned off on your computer?
That could be the problem on some of the other sites also.
Here is a cut and paste of the complete address that I get
when it opens, don't know if it will work on another computer.

Good Luck,

Dr.X

Dr. X ...

I'm sorry to be dense, but I don't know how to do that. Might you be
able to tell me?

I'm not having trouble accessing other Internet sites so far as I can
tell.

Thanks.

That is weird.

I don't seem to be having trouble getting to other Internet sites.

As I just posted in a reply to Dr. X, I'm sorry to be dense but I
don't know how to check my hosts file or to tell if it's been tampered

Linda. Not knowing something does not make you dense. It makes you ... um...
impressionable. ;-p

Ok now, about that hosts file. It's just a little text file that your
computer uses to keep track of some special addresses. Let's say your
company server is at ip address 1.2.3.4 and this number is just too long or
too hard to remember. In that hosts file, you can type something like this:
my-office-server 1.2.3.4
Now instead of typing the big long number that you can't remember, you just
type the name you gave it into the broweser and the computer looks it up in
the hosts file to direct you to the right site. That hosts file is just for
special addreses that can't be done automaticly by other means.
So then one day, a crazy virus maker decided that he can use that file to
make you not be able to find legitimate servers. He figured out that all he
has to do is add a line to that file with the name of the web site and a
fake ip address. Now your computer looks at that file and can't find the
right web site.

To fix all this insanity, all you have to do is go to that file and remove
the entry for that website. Remember, this is only if that is in fact what
the problem is.

To test this, just open a browser and type in the address bar:
http://193.86.103.19
and see if grisoft appears.

If it does, then it may well be the hosts file problem.

If it does NOT appear, STOP RIGHT HERE...(no need to send you into system
folders if that's not the problem), and report back here to let us know.

If it is the hosts file probem, then go to your Windows folder (it may be
called windows or winnt) then go to the system32 folder, then into the
drivers folder, then on to the etc folder, in there you will find a file
called hosts (with no extention)

so the full path is c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
or replace winnt with windows.

now dbl click the hosts file. It will probably ask you what program you want
to open it with. select from the list NOTEPAD.

you are now looking at that crazy thing called the hosts file. Look through
it and see if grisoft.com is listed there. look at what ip address it is
paired up with. remove that line and save the file.

If you aren't comfortable making changes to this file, ask a computer savy
friend to do it for you. (although I think you're probably going to find it
quite easy).

Ok, when you're done, close up and restart your explorer (or whatever
browser you use) and try grisoft.com again.

Note that if you saw grisoft in that hosts file then chances are you will
also see other antivirus sites there too. They should also be removed since
the malicious activity is likely trying to keep you from going to any of
them to seek help.

ok, let me know how well you do and ask if you need help.

It's a file read by your browser that will redirect requests to your
local machine instead of the web site.

Dr.X

Dr. X ...

First, thank you for the kind words about not knowing something not
making a person dense. I appreciate that. :-)

Second ... WOW! It WORKED!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information with
me and to provide such wonderfully clear instructions.

I typed in the URL you provided and sure enough, it went to the proper
Web site. So then I went back and followed your instructions to open
my hosts file.

And there were all the addresses! There were 39 different
anti-virus-related addresses listed. Incredible.

So I deleted them all, and then reopened my brower and tried a few of
the addresses and they went right to where they were supposed to go!

This is terrific!

And in the process, I've learned something completely new. I didn't
even know there was a host file, let alone that it could be tampered
with, or how to access it.

It's amazing that someone can put together a program that can block
addresses the way this worm does.

This has been a great way to learn how to do something -- and to also
learn about a whole new area of my computer.

By the way -- earlier this evening, before I went out to a play, I
started running the Norton Virus Scan. As I've mentioned, my free
trial has expired. But the scan still operates. I wanted to see if I
might still have the worm.

I left the scan running while I went out. But -- while I was at the
theatre --or enroute -- it occurred to me that since I hadn't done a
virus update (since the trial had expired), even if I had the worm,
the virus scan wouldn't have found it because it wouldn't have known
it was supposed to be looking for it. Right?

If that is indeed right, then the people who have responded or
commented to my posts on this newsgroup should know that it's thanks
to you that I'm thinking along those lines and getting a clearer
picture of how this all fits together.

Anyway. I'm just so happy about having found the hosts file and it
was fascinating to see all those addresses in there. Amazing.

Dr. X, you are a wonderful person. Thank you again -- so much! You
spelled it out so clearly for me and made it so easy for me to resolve
the problem.

And to all the other very nice people who have so kindly helped me
with suggestions and guidance as I attempted to figure this out --
thank you, all, too. You're great, and I appreciate it very much.

Now I just have to decide on an anti-virus program. :-)
