I am not sure that I know much about usenet either after using this and
other newsgroups all year.

All I did was find the newgroups via Microsoft and then use Outlook Express
as a newsreader.

Is usenet a standard/protocol or what?

Hi Trevor,
Is usenet a standard/protocol or what?

Dictionary.com defines "Usenet" as:

"A messaging system that uses a computer network, especially the Internet,
to transfer messages organized in thematic groups."

This term has specifically come to mean newsgroups. Newsgroups are a
messaging system that uses NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol).

If you have any version of IIS (Internet Information Services), you can set
up your own local NNTP server, as well as an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol) server, and an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server. Of course,
you're already acquainted with the HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)
server, which is typically called a "web server."

I quite agree with you Carol. I am so frustrated trying to get a thread put
on here to get help with Outlook Express.I put my message on and was told I
was in the wrong newsgroup. Where!!!! is the right one. I thought I had the
right forum but it is far too complicated

Rob! I gave all my! relevant information, albeit in the wrong newsgroup. I
did not get any help. Have only registered in the last couple of hours and
find it very frustrationg trying to find the correct one. Maybe it is easy
for all you old timers on here.

It may be microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general.

In OE itself,
Click on msnews.microsoft.com
Click on Newsgroups
Type in outlookexp
Scroll down to microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general
Select it
Click on Subscribe
