Yup, I've had those cables switched around so many ways that I
probably wore 'em out!

I formated the HD before I started, but I forget iffn I made the first
partition active or not. Will check.

I tried to install with a bootable CD, it worked on my Good Machine,
but didn't do nada on the lame one. It gets to the point of checking
the IDE primary and secondar drives and then just stops. The cursor
keeps blinking, but nothin' happens. Can't enter any commands, either.

I'm 'bout ready to take this puppy out and use it for Winchester
practice. :)

You ran memtest86 on the good memory? Is PSU working to capacity?
Assuming you have double checked the IDE cables and bios setttings to boot
from the CD? You could try booting the CD without the HD connected
including no power connection. That should at least try to boot.
Otherwise if the memory is good, psu is good and it's not a cable or bios
issue it's spare parts or a target.

After P200mmx I saw very few that had support for both simm and dimm.
Most of the slot1 motherboards were dimm only. Even socket 370, IIRC,
had celerons at 66 not 100, right?

Correct!

You cannot use both SIMMs and DIMMs on this board and cpu.

You must use all SIMMs or all DIMMs.
