Finally got my MAC lol

Lookee! Yeah, I know it has to settle and might fluctuate a bit..... but seriously... WOW! :thumb::thumb::D

Great isn't it :D

Now the only thing I'm waiting for, is for Zen to send me a confirmation e-mail, so that I can set up a new e-mail address. Apparently, it's still in the process of updating on their systems, so probably won't happen until tomorrow. Very helpful peeps though. :D

Looking gooooooood TC! :D

You should just use Gmail, so your address isn't tied to the ISP.

So far, the connection has been very steady this evening, and certainly speedy. Webpages seem to load almost before I've finished clicking! Can't believe it lol.

The confirmation e-mail I mentioned above, came through just an hour or so after I posted. That was good, but haven't yet managed to configure them for Thunderbird yet. Will give it another go tomorrow.

@ V_R, yes, I already have a couple of webmail accounts, but really prefer the desktop client. It just feels more comfortable and personal to use... lol.

Coms, meanwhile, have sent me an invoice for payment for October. lol. We're paid-up until the end of Sept., (it was a monthly contract) so I'm assuming it to be an error; maybe their departments are not in synch(?) I've written to query it, so hopefully that will be sorted. (Probably a good idea to cancel the DD at the bank too.)

Do you mean that you prefer an actual email client (e.g. Thunderbird) to a browser? Gmail (among many others) can be used "with" a client. In fact, that is what I do.

Yes Urmas :thumb: that's it exactly. I've been using Thunderbird since Microsoft decided to put an end to Windows Mail. (I didn't like the "replacement" Windows Live mail so much either tbh lol.)

Anyway, after spending a couple of hours trying to get it up and running with my new account, I finally had to admit defeat and called Zen's tech department.

The tech was very helpful and helped to sort out the glitch. Could have hugged him lol.

well, 'tech' support works then. :thumb:

you know Thunderbird is now a damp budgie?

Erm, yes, it does. Over the last eleven and a half years, the time I've been with Zen, I have mentioned, ooh, once or twice  how good Zen's support is.

Real human beings who understand the English language (even with a Taff accent ;) )

Glad you're sorted TC, how is Guild Wars 2 online now? Any better?

Oh, and wassup with Thunderbird Mr Mucks? I haven't used it for some time now.

I actually use MS Outlook 2007 :o And, er, Opera :o Me such a dork :D

Damp budgie Mucks? That description gave me a chuckle. Well it's certainly not the easiest to set-up... even the tech-guy commented on how TB tends to change things every few months, which results in others experiencing configuration problems too. (I wasn't the first he'd had to help today lol.)

But I have to strongly agree with Flopps about the support. They sound genuinely courteous, friendly and helpful. It's refreshing not to meet with the "scripted" chat, or a mechanical "Hello, this is Chardonnay, how can I help yooo."

Guild Wars 2 actually does seem to play more smoothly. It loads very quickly too, although some of the busy cities still take a while... but guessing that has more to do with ANet's servers, possibly?

Going back to e-mails though... who (or what) is considered to be the best on the block now..? I have been looking at some options, but kept coming back to Thunderbird. (I don't have Microsoft Office, so can't use Outlook.) Basically, I just dislike web-mail - or at least, those that I've used, i.e., gmail, hotmail, Ymail.

Probably makes me a dork - or a dinosaur too lol. :o :D

You can use your Gmail (and those others you mention) with (at least) Thunderbird.

HOWTO for Gmail:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

As for Thunderbird, here is a snippet from Wikipedia:

On July 6, 2012, Mozilla announced the company was dropping the priority of Thunderbird development because the continuous effort to extend Thunderbird's feature set was mostly fruitless. The new development model is based on Mozilla offering only "Extended Support Releases", which deliver security and maintenance updates, while allowing the community to take over the development of new features.
One way to read that is the realisation that an email client has become "ready"... you know, like... um... ahem... a plunger. And it gets updated pretty darn often; the latest stable release, 31.1.1, was released on September 9.

Alternative? Dunno why if T-bird works for you, but... Sylpheed, maybe.

Just remember: keep well, well, well away from Incredimail!

TBird is on the back burner, will boil dry eventually. No matter, people are still using XP. ;)

I gave up on email 'clients' long ago ... :)

It is now 12 days since the FTTC connection went live. Despite the 5-day landline outage, during which, internet speed dropped to around 50 Mbps (it's wires were being strangled in a cabinet door, so not unreasonable...) it seems to have settled. 60+ down and 14 - 15 up.

(Sorry guys, dummy-question alert...)

The modem and router have been left on 24/7 during this time (as per the instructions from Zen.) Would it be safe to assume that by now, they would consider the line to be stable and settled? If we needed to switch them off, for any reason (thunderstorm - moving stuff around, etc...) would it make the system think there was an instability, do you think..?

Yeah it'll be fine, the DLM will only kick in if it drops a few times in a row for example, as long as you don't keep turning it on and off it should be good.

I've regularly done the same,. Even if it does drop a bit, it 'should' go back up after a while anyway. :)

You've got a static IP haven't you? Set up a BQM on Think BB if you haven't already. :)

Thanks for the helpful reply and info V_R.

I normally don't fiddle with the router, other than on the aforementioned occasions, when lightning might be a hazard, for example. I was just curious to know if speeds dropped, did they remain that way permanently, or rise again? Thanks for clearing that up.

Will take a look at TBB's monitor :thumb:

remember ... the first rule of computing if 'something' goes wrong;

REBOOT : EVERYTHING

... so, you will be turning off the modem/router anyway, it Windows, innit. :D

A good linky, thanks V_R, it's not only interesting, but understandable too. :thumb:
