Final VISTA release in DVD only or also on CD

Unless something has changed, Microsoft has stated in the past that no
additional builds would be released to testers on a CD ISO(s). I am
unable to quote or provide links due to NDA.

What does that have to do with the media format of the final release to the
public?

Vista x64 is now to big to fit on a DVD. You must use a duel layer DVD.

And it makes sense that the x64 version would only be released on DVD as
those are newer machines. For x86, especially some of the lower end
versions such as Home Basic, a CD release would seem logical as there are a
number of older machines that it would run on, many without DVD drives.

Common sense - very unlikely they'll put something 3GB+ on seperate CD's
They' ve done it before. Wouldn't be hard to break apart. They've
certainly spanned to a much greater extent when floppies ruled the world.
Common sense says they would do it because it quite simple and makes it
available to an even wider consumer base.

Not to mention that game makers have been shipping titles on multiple CDs
for years. I really don't see why MS wouldn't make Vista available on CD.
Win95 was available on floppy to those who requested it--and CD replication
cost is (probably) much lower than floppy.

Not ideal, but I don't see MS telling everybody to get a DVD drive (as cheap
as they may be today).

Actually, MS should just ship a DVD drive to anyone who asks for Vista on
CD. :o)

Now I'm not sure whether I got this confused or not - maybe Andre can help
clarify, but with the upgrading feature in the Welcome Center of each
edition, didn't they say that you can either upgrade to the next edition up
(say from Home Basic to Home Premium) either from the original disk or the
Internet?

If it is therefore upgradable from the original disk, does that mean that
essentially all the editions will come on one disk, and only the specific
Product Key activates and unlocks a certain edition? Hmm...

That is my understanding (had forgotten about that).

I was wondering if the final release of VISTA will be on DVD only....
Any one has info on this?

This site just went live recently -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/systemrequirements.mspx.
This lists the minimum requirements for Vista. Note that for Optical Drive
it says CD-ROM.

Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx) are the
requirements for a Vista Capable and Premium PC.

Is your PC ready for Vista? Install and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor
(Beta) to find out -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx.

This has already been tested on 5308. All the versions Home Basic, Home
Premium, Business, and Ultimate will be on one DVD. It is the product key
that determines which version you end up with. This way Microsoft only needs
one box not several boxes on the store shelves.

Well, the general consensus was that the CD images didn't even have the
complete drivers and lacked a few things, and they were doing it for
experimental purposes and canned the idea.

Again, I could be wrong, but from what I understand it is highly unlikely we
will see it on CD-ROM.

....as the "mainstream" version, sure, but I'd bet MS will still make a
CD-based version available upon request.

Upgrade Advantage, if you are running Home Basic or Premium, you will see
the option in Control Panel (Classic View - easier to find).
