I'm not convinced and sorely disappointed that either quality or innovation
is much of a goal.

Looking at Vista
http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2006/08/01/looking-at-vista/

Vista should be renamed Apathy. Sinofsky would put a dead chicken in a box
and call it Windows Vista.

I still see no reason why they can't make the bugs public--no one would
argue MSFT doesn't have access to Virtual Servers, Sql Servers, Cluster
servers, Longhorn servers--sort them, context them--they have
obsessively--and share the same access to bugs with public that Beta testers
have or stop the charade for the public to report bugs.

Pure and simple public Betas for Windows Operating Systems are part of
Sales. That's the reason they are there. MSFT doesn't give a damn how well
the OS is used or how knowledgable the user is, and what most people don't
seem to notice is their is damn little documentation on Vista on the site.

Not one decent article on SFC, Win RE, System Restore. Their are
superficial little paragraphs on them. And I'll tell ya Win RE is not
working a huge percent of the time. In that ancient OS long ago, called Win
XP I can make a repair install from retail Media not the OEM named partner
crap that MSFT pretends works fix Windows every single time--unless
relatively rare situations--destroyed partitions or less common situations
like a Linux bootloader in a multi or dual boot which will block setup in a
repair install.

That Win RE is not working well is a big deal. That MSFT is apathetic about
it and many other things (Mario Rosario said it well--they are fixing
selected bugs, they are not innovating features or fixing big issues now or
ever) is sad.

I would characterize this beta as the most apathetic beta teams with the
biggest promotional budget in the history of Windows. A damn sad way for
Jim Allchin to do his last innings running Windows.

And sadly, Allchin probably forgets more about Windows every 10 minutes
than Steve Sinofsky every knew in his life. Sinofsky is not a knowledgable
Windows maven. Sinofsky would put a dead chicken in a box and call it
Vista, and is heading toward that endpoint. That's a fact. And I thought ME
was terrible
but we have ME Redux.

There are indications to me. Delay is in fact being hotly debated by your
friends at Redmond. There are a slew of arguments right now between PMs who
know are ready to push to get anything signed off and developers who know
much is broken.

If this thing ships Nov/Jan it will be the most broken Windows ever. It is
now far short of what was conceived, and it is not fixing major components.
And it will get characterized as a turkey promptly by people who take every
aspect of it apart.

CH

MSFT never believed quality products generate more revenue. They are
arrogant enough to believe if they slap that Windows logo on a box and sell
it to OEM while they ship pure crap and call it recovery DVDs that they will
sell 400,000,000 preinstalled Vistas in 24 months. Upgradable installed base
of 200 million PCs. Windows Vista /Office 12 Will Spark Enterprise Refresh
Cycle " That's what their slide says "the industry forecasts." But that's
not what orders say, and it's not what any reliable forecasts say.

The motto seems to be "get it out whatever."

You are still a year off.
Windows ME was released in July 2000.
Windows XP was released in October 2001. So it will be over 5 years since
the last major release of an operating system, less service packs and
yearly refresh to the product.

Does it really matter if it is a sales tool or not? I don't care if they
released it to find bugs or to sell more copies. I am just thankful that they
didn't completely shut out everybody on what was happening.

For Starter or Home Basic it should be OK. Anything above that will benefit
greatly from 1GB.

No doubt about that. The more people who use it, the more people who
discuss its pluses, minuses, features and what can be used to run it, the
better people are armed to deal with it and hopefully enjoy it. I think it
has considerably more of a chance to succeed if they will give it the six
months more it needs so that people will not be pushed, shoved, and dragged
kicking and screaming to sign off on things they know are incomplete or not
in good working order.

Aparently they plan to shlep out the confused puppy they've made on October
25, 2006 or close.

Or you could pay Steve Jobs $129 every year or so for OS X updates on a Mac

Well, I hope that Windows Vista release date is pushed back and a RC2
package is released for everyone that is more stable especially in my
case with the sound. The error message goes ---- oh this problem will
be fixed in RTM time --- bs --- this is crazy because Microsoft is going
to release a product to manufacturing before these major sound bugs with
the sound settings are fixed. I ask Microsoft if they are reviewing
these posts for more time and especially a RC2 package that fixes the
sound issues and is even more stable.

To Microsoft's credit I really appreciate all they have done such as the
Windows Security Update cd which was released for FREE in February 2004
for those who remember. It has been an extremely helpful utility in
updating Windows 98SE machines for my workplace where I help out in the
computer security arena. The amusing thing is some errors just
disappear after applying the security update cd and this makes things so
much easier since this cd replaces corrupted files and adds some missing
files. In addition, Microsoft released Virtual PC for free after 98,
98SE and ME support ended to help companies make the transition from
these older operating systems. This is not a complete solution but it
is a start and that is why I am pushing Microsoft for a Classic Windows
Series that will support older computers that cannot run XP due to the
greater system requirements that XP requires. There are some people who
do not want XP and are probably not going to be interested in any flavor
of Vista either so if Microsoft is smart they will target these people.
I worked at Target for 7+ years and so I have some idea about business.
I also enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal <smile> Anyway, back to
all things Vista and please forgive the aside for a moment.

Final release date is still the same. There will not be an RC2. A new
interim build did release to TechBeta today but will not be available to
CPP.

I am very surprised and pleased that Microsoft released
this build to CPP testers. I honestly didn't think there would
be another release for us to test, either. However, Microsoft
did something similar when they released build 5536 to CPP
users. Microsoft is really working this hard, fine tuning the
gold release- bravo, Microsoft.

It is about time too that Microsoft has realized that users like us are
important parts of making sure that the operating system is stable.
