Linux (at least, the SuSE 9.0 distro that I've used) can read NTFS, but
can't write to that system. And yes, it's true that FAT32 is acceptable
to both Windows and Linux. I run two external hard drives off USB ports,
both 120G and both being FAT32.
The problem I encountered (just today!) with that arrangement is that
Linux has suddenly and arbitrarily removed the external hard drive icons
(sda1 and sdb1) from my Linux desktop and also assigned full
read/write/execute privileges to root alone--which means I can't get to
'em from Linux!
As to arbitrary size limits on a partition, placed by either Windows XP
or Partition Magic, I can't say. I run, as I said, two large external
drives, each with a single partition on it. Running under Windows
XP/SP2, I haven't had any trouble with that arrangement. Disk size is
reported correctly at 112G available; Used portion (about 2% on each) is
reported correctly; no problems with access or use.
