EXACTLY. Clueless users or badly configured AV software...

I saw someone in BestBuy the other week who bought Norton AV but they
mentioned to the sales droid that they did NOT have an internet
connection... They just wanted to be safe from all the viruses going around!
I am sure they are not savvy enough to worry about diskette or USB-key fob
based viruses... and the sales droid didn't bother pointing out that their
expensive AV would not be able to keep up to date... :-(

I was a beta tester for 6.2 and for 7 (upcoming). I was told that
customers wanted email scanning... Obviously a marketing decision.
Maybe it makes people feel better - I used to turn it off except
that then the tray icon had a big red X over it - implying something
was wrong...

Had an interesting experience with the program this morning. After
working flawlessly for the past few months, some kind of glitch
occurred in this morning's sig download. For some reason, I happened
to click on "About" and was advised that my data files were missing
and that I had an "update" date of Jan 0, 1980.

Next, I did a manual Autodownload and was told that my virus files
were up to date! :)

So I ftp'd to the site and downloaded the current vet.signatures-8621
zip file and loaded manually into the program and all is well.

Must have been just some sort of glitch, because my next step was to
turn on another computer that also runs 6.3 and see how it handled the
automatic update upon booting up. It encountered no problems and
routinely obtained and installed the current sig file with no
assistance from me. Go figure.

Normally, I think that a second eTrust icon would have appeared in the
system tray and begun flashing to alert me of a problem. This didn't
happen, and perhaps it might have been because I've disabled the
realtime email scan and always have the red X mentioned above by Kerry
Liles.
