Has anyone any experience with this, is it any good, or should I be using
something else
thanks

It is very good and not a resource hog like some of the big named
programs, I used it for many years starting when it used to be the free
InoculateIT and it is still on my husbands XP machine.

No, that would be EZ-Trust. he said EZ-Trend.

Depends on what you're plans are. If they include p2p file sharing,
indiscriminate surfing and installing unchecked files downloaded from
the internet, open ports for instant messaging and IRC channels, then
it's probably not good enough and it's all over except for reformatting.
If those aren't in your plans, it's probably just fine.

How so? EZ-AV (I presume that is what we are really discussing here despite
probable typos/misunderstandings) doesn't directly scan instant messenger or
P2P file transfers (nor FTP etc) BUT it does monitor files on OPEN so I dont
see what the problems might be.

Exactly, you have hit the nail on the nail there.

There is no need for ETrust EZ Antivirus to scan mail, P2P or messenger
files, simply because it scans all files when they are created or opened.
In other words, it does exactly the same job, only with much less bloat
and crap.

Exactly what I was thinking... I laugh at the outbound mail scanners (even
inbound too) - I think it is sufficient to scan for known viruses on file
open. BTW: the assumption here is that the AV program scans ALL files on
open - not just favourite extensions (since file extensions can be obscured
[thanks Windows default folder settings] or just plain wrong).

Yes, that's right - you can configure it to ensure that it scans all
files. At least you can on my v7.0.139 - not sure about v6.X.X, 'cos I
haven't used it for years.

There is no need for ETrust EZ Antivirus to scan mail

But it does, in version 6.2. Not sure that's an improvement, though.

In the bit of my message that you snipped, I said I didn't use version 6
and haven't done for a couple of years. I use version 7, in which mail
scanning and shit like that is neither present nor required.

As you seem to be implying (unless I am mistaken), it's probably not
needed in version 6 either - I am fairly certain that provides the same
ability to scan files on creation and opening as version 7.

Who cares, anyway. I've been using ETrust for years and have never been
infected. ;)

I have used EZ Trust since it was the free InoculateIT PE.....and I like it.
I had version 6.2 and turned off the email scanning because it is not needed
in my book.

I have since changed to the free Microsoft EZ Armor LE antivirus (without
the firewall......long story**)......but it is a slightly lesser version
(6.1.9) and doesn't have the email scanning.

**The firewall with it is the free Zone Alarm....I have ZA Pro, so didn't
want to downgrade that.

In short....it is an excellent antivirus program for your every day use.

I was a beta tester for 6.2 and for 7 (upcoming). I was told that customers
wanted email scanning... Obviously a marketing decision. Maybe it makes
people feel better - I used to turn it off except that then the tray icon
had a big red X over it - implying something was wrong...

Have you had a go at the re-wrapped ZA from Computer Associates called
eTrust EZ Firewall? Mine's v4.5.585, not sure if there's a later
version, but I really like this one.
Just checked, this IS the latest.

I wrote to EZ Trust and they told me it was the FREE Zone Alarm. As I had
the pay one, I preferred to keep that one (4.5.538....not the latest one,
but I never use the latest ZA anyway)....

My EZ Trust AV was up for renewal and I asked if I could use the free MS
one......earlier on they had said current customers couldn't. Anyway, I
just installed the antivirus part and stayed with my ZAPro. But I am sure
the *rewrapped one* is quite good.....

Cheers...Heather

That shouldn't be a problem. Mine had the big red X, but I knew it was from
turning off the email scanning. My ISP has now gone to virus and spam
filters, plus I still use Mailwasher, so don't need that feature.

I suppose there is the possible situation where a virus infected file
finds its way onto your system, if that virus is new before it is
recognised by your Anti-Virus solution, and you could then
inadvertently email it somebody, but that's not really going to happen
with a responsible user.

I must admit I find it amusing when I receive an email from an AVG
user, and the date of the definitions it gives is 2 months old....

Alex.
