I have this weird weird problem, the pound sign £ on some websites has changed into a J , now i've asked other people to visit the sites im having problems with, and they say there alright. The 2 i found so far are www.lowestonweb.com and www.thecoolingshop.com .

Does anyone know a cure for my horrible problem?

What 'browser' are you using?

Check your 'regional & language' settings.

:)

To speed up things, he's using IE6 and he said he hadn't changed any settings, the problem just occured.

As Chris so kindly pointed out, i'm using IE6 (all updates etc etc) and i didnt change anysettings, it just happened.

There were all perfect yesterday, and now today it does this to me :(.
I checked the regional setting and there all English (United Kingdom).

It also does it on PC Review to me :( .

why cure it? maybe it might be good prehaps when u buy something they will not take your £££'s but instead take your J's!

just kidding man we all wish id be around on your computer asap if it were to be the case

well heres the sensible approach. Do u notice that any other sign is missing or different? and does your @ sign and " sign in the same place as its meant to be?

Try going to IE, and hitting Tools -> Reset web settings

This will restore all settings to when it was new...

(it will lose your homepage)

KGB

seen this before when it replaces pound signs with random letters.

whenever i've seen it its been a fault with the website. so not sure whats causing your prob. resetting web settings is prob the best way to go.

That's certainly an odd one and I have not a clue how to fix it.

If it were me, out of desperation, I'd probably:

Power down computer and reboot.
Do what KGB suggested in previous post.
Clear your IE cache.
Defrag.
Clear CMOS and reset all Bios settings.
Update and run AdAware, and any other similar programs you have installed.
Update and run your anti-virus program.
Check for all latest Microsoft critical updates and apply where necessary.
Pray to whatever God/Deity/Karma you follow ;)

None of those (apart from KGB's suggestion) make any sense whatsoever relating to the problem, but it's what I'd try.

Hey,

This can happen if a system font becomes corrupted, this may start churning out random letters and numbers in place of the real characters.

Check your fonts elsewhere in the titlebar of other programs, see if the titles of programes appear correctly.

Chris,

Imrie

I doubt it could be the fonts, as some webpages are displaying correctly and some are not, so the character IS present in the font set, just not being utilised when needed. I think.

Not all websites would use the same font... could it be that the '£' symbol from the 'Verdana' font is missing, but it is in 'Areal'?

Done all that, ran spy sweeper, ad aware, spybot search and destroy, crap cleaner, easy cleaner, norton 2002, the trend free online scan, scan disk'd both drives, defragged both drives, reset every setting i can possibly find on IE to default.

I d/l and use mozilla and it diplays the £ signs perfect on the sites IE cant, but mozillas slower than my grandma and displays sites weird. :(

Ahh, too late mucks, i've gone all out and formatted n clean install windows xp.

I've been looking for a reason to format for a while, as my 2nd hard drive was FAT32 and i wanted to change to NTFS. Also i wanted it so all my programs/applications are on 1 drive and all my games, vids, music and stuff like that is on the other.

Took about 20 700mb CD-Rs to back up all my stuff :/ . But im getting there, started formatting when i got up (bout 1pm ish) and im still installing stuff now (bout 5:30pm ish). And my £ signs are back in business :).

Bit of an extreme solution

But if it worked and you've now got everything where you want it, perhaps it was a good thing, doesn't do any harm having a clean install now and again.

Perhaps you should consider a DVDRW, you can get one for around fifty quid now, disks also now cost about the same as CD-R's. You could have done all your backup on just 3 or 4 disks.

I've actually got one, and a brand spanking new pack of DVD's , ive just not got round to installing it yet, really cant be bothered, me case is so neat inside now, all my colourful zip-ties, ill just ruin it :p.

I yam flabbergasted. In fact me gaster is truly flabbered.

Man, there's such a thing as priorities.

Do yourself a favour and install that sucker. And then get some more zip ties if you need 'em and spend a little time tidying.

It would probably have taken you less time to install the DVDRW and cable tidy than it did to burn 20 CD-R's.

Hehe, whatever ;)

If you must you must ...

But I do agree with Flops, do please install your DVD-RW

I bought one not really knowing what I was going to do with it ... the price was too good to miss. However, Nettie's picture collection is now on two DVD's (I'll shortly need 3) and I'm begining to get an itchy figure to have a go at 'slide showing' some of our holiday snaps for the reast of the family abroad. :D
