I'm searching for quite a complete clone of winxp explorer, but not putting
all its crap in registry.
Does such a software exist?

thanx

Sorry, I didn't explain what I meant... I was talking of explorer as file
manager, not as shell.
Thank you, again

I don't have recommendation for any file managers purporting particularly
to be winxp explorer clones. What I can do is focus on the second part of
your quest, and assure that none of the following three keep their settings
in the registry (they use local ini files).

TrackerV3 http://www.trackerv3.com/
A43 File Manager http://www.shawneelink.net/~bgmiller/
FreeCommander http://www.freecommander.com/

Screenshots with descriptions for those together can be found at SnapFiles.
Listed there as well is one named ExplorerXP (http://www.explorerxp.com).
I haven't tried it (not compatible with my version Windows), but it's small,
and might be worth a moment to check into it.

unlike File Wizard, or Dos Navigator no "Explorer", and

I'm a squishy mouse sort, when it comes to preferred file navigation mode.

Far Manager has caught my eye, though, as tool for various circumstances.

For instance...
Reading at <http://innounp.sourceforge.net/>, I was interested in Far
Manager's "InstallExplorer" plugin. I don't know what all installer types
it handles, but I do long particularly for ability to handle Inno v2x.
(Innounp only does the v3x & v4x formats.)

Another item that caught my attention is where Far Manager speaks of
"Windows help files contents displaying (.hlp and .chm)." An internal
viewer? Any chance that contents are also browsable in extracted parts,
similar to the feature provided in $TC plugin?

I'm looking over a list just now on an array of FarManager functions,
the page for "Overview of plugin capabilities."

I know in advance that this prog won't suit my style for general default
file navigator, but as an interesting tool set, this looks really worth
investigating.

Oh my! Looks so much like my all time fav file manager Midnight Commander
on Linux. I know there's been attempts to port it to Windows, but it
doesn't really work that well. What I miss the most in command line file
managers is the lack of being able to set file associations effectively.
Maybe this one takes care of that?

This one I can answer.
Yes.

Eh nope. Navigated to chm & hlp & it just opens them as usual.

Whew, dunno what that means either. :|

Yes.

Oh crap. I screwed up again.
I was thinking file "attributes" not "associations" my bad.
Dunno this answer either. :(
Mea Culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

Really nice these ones... even if I'm still wondering if anybody knows of
something acting like explorer, looking like explorer, smelling like
explorer, but being NOT explorer and storing not his settings in the
registry... probably it's something too stupid... ;)

Thank you (all) for help, anyway, I'me cheking all them out now!

How stable is that one? Which downloads are required? It looks like a
conglomerate of dozens of elements, and it is hard to tel which are
required, and which are just icings on the cake.

If you want a more "all in one" Blackbox download, try "xoblite" or
"bblean" instead:

Only one file to download and install. You can add plug-ins later if you
want.

They are all quite stable..... at least compared to Windows Explorer.. :)

You do realise that the registry is basically one of the -core- elements
of Windo$e-[32]/[64], don't you? If you have such a problem with it
(especially where a file manager is concerned), you should probably
switch to another OS that does not use one.

Otherwise, try this.
