I also don't like installs. Since you have already installed it, could
you zip the folder contents (?) and upload to the binaries ng? I would
like to try it (see other post in this thread), maybe have better
results with it.

Mike, hi!

Yes, you can go back and clean stuff up, but I prefer to not have to
do that, too. I've posted the zip file in the binaries ng. Glad to
help. You'll actuallly be saving me a step. When you try it, can you
tell me if it works?

I don't know until the next reinstall after an hdd wipe if extracted
files work okay alone. This one seemed to be just an ordinary
file-copy type of installation (although we're told there were 8
registry entries - but those might just be file locations, etc., so
that the uninstall would know where to go?!). So if it works for you,
the installation was truly one of those simple ones for people who
prefer an automatic install over a manual one, rather than a complex
install routine. Though since it's working for me, odds aren't it
isn't one of those.

Cheers!

Thanks, fitwell.

Please leave it up for a little while, I just looked, and some spammmer
put 500 messages up so I can't see DIR2HTML. I need to wait about a day
and then reload all 5000 or so headers. First time I've seen that kind
of problem.

Did you go to alt.binaries.freeware? There is a bit of traffic there
but, admittedly, but not too much. Did you do a search for
"DIR2HTML"? Also, as for "leaving it up there for a while", that's
not up to me but individual servers. What I can do is if you don't
find it soon, I can re-post. But I get the feeling you're in a
different binaries group (either that or you're using a web-based
newsreader) (?).

Let me know and no problem in re-posting if need be.

Cheers and good luck! :oD

It's probably on the server and as you/Boomer say, it will probably be
there for awhile.
I seldom go to alt.binaries.freeware, so in Netscape when it loads
headers and the cache is old, I have a choice of a) download 500
messages, or b) all messages (now there's about 5500 messages).
Always before, I would see maybe 30 new headers. Today I clicked a) and
all 500 are spam! I don't see a way to start reloading until the cache
gets a day or so out of date. Next time, I'll download all messages and
will hopefully see Dir2HTML.

And it (alt.binaries.freeware) will be overtaken/abused if you don't

That's what I thought, Mike. You're on a web-based newsreader.
Shame. But nothing you can do if you're not at home or don't have
internet at home, I know (offices not allowing software to be
installed).

Good luck!

Well, this one was a lucky find. After only 3 links into the search
found one that finally works.

Why did all the other directory indexers I tried over the years not
work? Because if you changed the folder name sometime down the road,
or moved it, bye-bye index and you had to re-generate one.

Ah, found a flaw. This app is absolutely _perfect_ if you're not
recursively indexing your folders, i.e., nested ones, too. If you're
not doing that, this app is incredibly awesome!

But if you're dealing with a ton of folders within folders, here's the
problem for me and perhaps for others:

- let's say you name the initial index file in first folder something
like this:

INDEX OF FOLDERS' CONTENTS

if there are 20 folders in the main one, you get an html file in
_EACH_ of those folders with same title. They're all linked together
to be accessed via the first html file in the initial folder. Then
you must click on each link to get to the indexed content you're
looking for. That can result in too much clicking! Not good for me
personally.

I need an indexer that writes _one_ file for recursive but that shows
_all_ items in all folders somehow signalling each folder origin, too,
even if just referencing it. Also must use relative and not absolute
paths.

Just thought I'd mention this in case someone else is looking for a
good indexing app. Want that person to know the limitations of this
one as I just found this out.

So going on a search for one for something for the odd case of
recursive indexing I need. Fortunately 99% of what I do is covered by
DIR2HTML perfectly.

If I do find something, will report back.

Well, surprise, surprise. After all this, dirhtml turns out to be the
best for recursive. So what's different now from before, all the
other times I'd tried dirhtml and had to throw it away? Since I need
it for _one_ type of index, could afford the time to really fiddle to
get exactly what I needed. dirhtml requires a lot of fiddling and
still isn't as easy to use as it should be. However, about 35-45
minutes of testing, came up with an options that I'll be able to use
_always_. I'll need only to change the folder pathname whenever I use.
I saved that INI in with the source install files so that I need never
mess with it again from scratch. I got almost exactly what I need so
quite happy with dirhtml. This latest version is by far the best.

dirhtml v4.57:
http://home.pacbell.net/nitzsche/dirhtml.html

sample #1 made with dirhtml:
http://home.pacbell.net/nitzsche/sample.html
pretty cool, I didn't use the tables, I think I'll go back and modify
the ini to use them.

sample #2 made with dirhtml:

direct dl link, no install files:

Have you tried ?
CD2HTML 3.4.2 (last freeware version)
http://www.cd2html.de/

http://www.cd2html.de/download/cd2html_3.4.2.zip

If you have tried cd2html, was dir2html better.

Yes, I did try it and didn't care for it but it was a shareware demo
as I couldn't find the freeware one. Will definitely try it out now.
dirhtml is just so tricky to configure that would prefer an app that
is easier to use all around. I never have a problem remembering what
to do with DIR2HTML but dirhtml needs so much tweaking and then one
can't always remember what settings the ini files has so if end result
not quite right, have to go back and fiddle a bit again. Maybe this
one will do the trick. Though don't get me wrong, dirhtml is very,
very good. It's just that like Boomer, I have certain criteria that
needs to be met. I work in hundreds of apps, almost literally, during
any given month that if an app is not easy to use and efficient and
I'm slowed down or stopped and I can't afford to use that app.

Thanks for the URL.

OHMIGOD!! CoMa am I ever glad I gave this a try even though the
shareware demo I tried was crap and wouldn't work. Glad I didn't
assume the freeware would also be trash. The freeware is an
incredible app!

The demo didn't thumbnail properly and there were problems with it
every single time of the 3 I used. It never completed the task once.

Just now, clicked through the options quickly and, unlike dirhtml, no
hassles. The only thing I had to change in options (EDIT > OPTIONS)
was under the HTML1 tab to click on "Create one HTML-file". That's
it.

Unlike DIR2HTML which then creates a sub-HTML file in each subfolder,
it indexed all the nested folders and referenced them all in the _one_
ndex file. It even created thumbnails so that the index shows either
an icon for a file type, if it's not a graphic, or a small thumbnail
of the graphic (whose size is customizable in the options menu under
EDIT > OPTIONS > Image tab).

It took it about 30 seconds to process or slightly less (creating
thumbnails to boot) and then another few seconds when writing the html
file for first time.

I can recommend this one for recursive indexing. So DIR2HTML for
indexing of individual folders, CD2HTML 3.4.2 for recursive or
indexing of folders with graphics (bearing in mind that extra folder
will be created to hold the thumbnails.

Thanks!

(Tested it 3 times and 3 times a-okay so far!)

You are welcome :-)

I myself have liked cd2html for a very long time,
it do the stuff in the way I want.
