I am now getting the following error message most times when I swicth on my PC:

"Display Driver R300 stopped responding and has recovered".

Is this serious? What is wrong? What can I do to fix it?

You need to provide more specific information, such as what video card, what video driver version, etc.

Thanks for your reply. This is the info I have: ATI Radeon X1300 Pro 256 MB
DVI/VGA output with 1xS-Video output. Hope this helps, but it doesn't mean
anything to me!

Thanks very much for your help.

Disable Dreamscape perhaps, if you have NVidia 8800 cards.

Have you gone to ATI's website and downloaded and installed their latest drivers?
I'm not that familiar with ATI products however.
Other causes might be a program you recently installed. You could try to see if uninstalling
the program solves the problem.
You could try a System Restore. You could try Windows Update.

Can't tell you what to do about it, but you're not alone. I have an nVidia
card and get a similar message when waking from sleep or when user account
control kicks in (that's when the screen dims and Vista asks for permission
to continue an action). It happens randomly, not all the time.

I thought this was just an nVidia driver issue, but since you're having the
same message with ATI then perhaps it is something Vista related.

My problem is a bit worse than yours: sometimes it gets locked in a loop
and won't recover without a reboot. I've tried new drivers; no change.

Many thanks for your reply - much appreciated. I did try to do a System
Restore but Vista wouldn't let me (it failed after trying) despite the fact
that I hadn't changed anything or installed anything. I was trying to
restore to a point 5 days ago when the display driver problem started.

Thanks. It's nice to know that I am not alone here - didn't know if it's a
problem with my new PC (already had to have a new mother board due to a
problem) or with Vista. It seems to be Ok if I reboot. Let's hope an update
will fix it.

Make sure you send the error report to MS, it's sort of a vote on what bugs
to fix next. Control Panel - Problems Reports And Solutions (if MS knows the
fix it will tell you here).

If you head on over to the ATI site, you'll see they have the Catalyst 7.3
drivers out. Note that ATI releases a new set of drivers ever month, next
month is the 7.4 (for 2007, 4th month). I've had good success with the
7.1-7.3s thus far.
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/common-vista32.html

When you say switch on, do you mean power up ? Or bring out of
hibernate\sleep ? I don't use that feature much myself. The times you
normally get those kinds of error messages, in during video games, when the
graphic card becomes overwhelmed (maybe due to overheating or lack of stable
power).

My guess would be that the drivers, do like the sleep state, if that is what
you are doing. Maybe the newer drivers won't have that issue.
Here is a blurb from the release notes for 7.3 that might address you're
issue

*Attempting to resume from an S3 state under Vista no longer results in the
CRT display device failing to display an image. Further details can be found
in topic number 737-26632

I only get the error when I switch on from cold, on power up. Havn't had it
when the PC has hibernated (monitor power down). Had it again today - i.e.
most times now when I power up. I don't use video games so I don't think the
drivers have been under a lot of pressure. Is it possible to uninstall the
new ATI drivers if a problem results?

Yes, you can uninstall the new ATI video drivers if the problem persist. But
I'd have to ask, why would you want to uninstall the latest drivers and go
back to older drivers ?

You'll get the option to uninstall in the control panel - Programs applet.

Really odd that you are seeing that error on power ups.

New drivers with "fixes" are notorious for making things worse, so I
understand why you might want to uninstall the new ATI dirvers if this
happens. You have two fairly straightforward ways to do this:

1) The best, in my opinion, would be to set a restore point before
installing the drivers. Vista should set a restore point automatically, but
it never hurst to set your own. If you're not familiar with this, just
search restore points under Vista help and the explanations are pretty good.
If the new driver causes problems, you can revert to the restore point and
system settings will be restored without changing things like documents and
emails. However, if you do something like installing another program before
reverting, then you will also lose that program install when you revert.

2) Go to Device Manager and you'll find an option to "revert to prior
version" or something similar for the display driver. This will change the
driver back, at least in theory. I had problems with this not working
properly once; seems like getting old drivers completely uninstalled is
always a challenge.

Steve, looks like we are having the same problems. When I get the R300 error
while working on something or on the internet, my mouse diappears and my key
board stops responding. I checked "event viewer" in the Control Panel and see
that I get this error all the timewhether the machine is sleeping or if I am
working on it. I had a Senoir ech at Dell in Austin work on it. and it seemed
to disappear for a while. It started again recently and I think it was
because I allowed a website download an actve X add on. I don't know if this
is a problem with Dell PC's alone or if other makes are getting this R300
error.

Certainly not a brand-specific prob. I recently purchase a Toshiba satelite
A135-S2386 & it's giving me the exact same error. I have returned the laptop
once and the eror message continues.

Rama,
What video card do you have in your laptop? I have an ATI Raedon 1300 and
was wondering if that was the culprit. Did you start getting the error after
going to a website that wanted to download an active X add on?

I, too am getting the R300 error message when I play my game,
battlefield 2142. here is what i posted on another forum.
it sounds like if you guys figure it out, it should be the same sol'n.
here is my quote:

Yesterday, I went to play 2142, and no matter what map I am trynig to
get into, Singleplayer, Online, Conquest, Titan, Co-op, AL, the bar
freezes at about 75 % and nothing happens. I am forced to start the
task manager and end program. I get a little balloon from the lower
right hand corner saying
"Display Driver R300 has stopped working and been recovered"
or something very similar to that.
I have tried every map, and every game mode.
I have tried mulitple CPU restarts, and reinstalled the game.
I then went to ATI's site, and downloaded the latest updates for my
video card.
As I was installing the update, the screen went black, and after 10
seconds came back on super-low resolution. About 30 seconds later, it
went black went back to normal.
I decided that maybe it was just checking out the res range on my comp
and it was all ok.
Then about 45 seconds after that, the computer went black, restarted
itself and gave me the Blue Screen of Death. I did a normal restart
and the actual computer worked fine, but not 2142.

I have googled this error message, and I have found that it is only a
Vista problem, and that gamers from Chess Titans to WoW have had this
problem. I was not able to find a solution but there was a lot of
talk about video cards and updates, (this is what made me try the
update)

It was too late for me to stay awake after the BSOD last night, so I
went to bed. I am about to try 2142 again, and if that does not work,
I am going to try the driver update again.

I know this is lame, but I have not run a defrag, virus scan, or
windows live onecare safety scanner. ( these will be my next steps)

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

If you ever have this problem got to MSConfig
2.) Go to Services Tab
3.) Hit "Hide all Microsoft services"
4.) Go to Startup Tab
5.) Hit Disable All.
6.) Try your game
It worked? Good. Continue on.
7.) Go to www.sysinfo.org
8.) Under Startup, search all the things you have in startup, and only
enable the ones that they suggest.
9.) After you have re-enabled all of these 'good' ones, try your game
again.
Did it work?
10.) Play your game, and remember that Jaxn helped you...

BTW, I have no Idea why m name shows as Item Replicator, it is Jaxn13.

It really seems like a video card problem, but it really is more
likely a windows update that threw your config off.
