Epson R200 slow to start printing?

It is almost certain to be a USB hub/connection problem.

The USB cable from the printer connected via the 8 port USB 2 hub
resulted in the long waiting times before printing. Connecting
directly to the port on the PC solved this and printing is
instantaneous.

I am thinking that perhaps if I had two separate hubs from the two USB
ports on the computer, if I had all my USB 1 devices (the devices I
was having issues with) on one of the hubs, and all the other devices
(USB 2) on the other hub, perhaps that would solve all my problems?

At the moment I am now just limited to two USB ports on the computer.
I can't connect the hub for other devices unless I disconnect the
printer.

I didn't have any problems with excessive cleaning cycles. No noise
between sending a job and waiting for printing to commence.

I believe you have helped solve the problem! I have been using a
powered D-Link 8 port USB2 hub and had the printers usb cable
connected through it.

I have now tested the printer with the cable connected directly to one
of the USB ports on the computer, and the 2 text and 2 draft prints I
have done printed instantaneously!

Hum. My hub is powered and it appears this hub was causing the
problem. I wonder if there are any hubs that wont cause a problem?
Perhaps using a different hub to the D-Link one I have? One from a
different company?

Believe it or not I had a similar problem a couple of years ago (with a
scanner) and I sent my powered hub back (can't remember the make) and had it
replaced with a D-Link which works fine. Maybe the first one was faulty but the
D-Link is good for me, a 4 port hub in my case.
Connecting directly to the computer does solve the problem. It does
also create another problem for me though.

My keyboard and mouse are wireless and the receiver has to be
connected to the other USB port on my computer which means there are
now no spare USB ports. So I can only have the printer connected to
it directly, or have the hub and attached device connected instead.

I thought that USB was supposed to be a system that you were able to
daisy-chain together lots of different devices? I can't understand why
there is a problem connecting a printer to the hub?

Sorry I can't give a technical explanation but it certainly happens.
Do you think that if I connect an additional USB card within the
computer I would able to connect my device to that without problems?
Or perhaps there is another make of USB hub I can buy that wont have
issues with printer?

I don't know if you can install a local additional USB adaptor in the PC, the
question may be better asked in one of the PC forums.
Microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware perhaps?
What about the USB socket that is on the front of the printer? Is
there a way I can connect my hub to that and run additional devices
through the hub via the printer? Or is the USB port on the front of
the printer just for sending images to the printer from digital
cameras etc? I have never really known what the purpose of that socket
is?

The port on the front of the PC should be functionally identical to the ones at
the back, so give it a go.
Good luck

It is almost certain to be a USB hub/connection problem.

Some hubs have a bad time with mixed usb1/2 devices. Find a store that
doesn't give you a hard time with returns and try some different ones. I
can't say I have enough experince with different hubs to be meaningful, but
I do seem to have had less problems with hubs that come with power supplies
compared to 'self powered' hubs.

I use D-Link 4 port USB1 and USB2 powered hubs.

Whether the USB device mfr says I need to or not:
I plug all USB devices only into hub powered ports.
I plug USB powered hubs only into the motherboard's rear I/O ports.

No problems.
