The beta seems MUCH improved over the version 7 eval I tried when it was
first released. They have also integrated the Personal Email Scanner,
which was a somewhat unknown add-on before. So far, I'm happy with the
beta of Free 7.

Me, too. And I agree that the current beta is significantly improved over
the first version of 7. Hopefully the final version will be better yet.

There was a long thread about this already. And support for AVG 6
doesn't end until Dec. 31, 2004. Besides, the AVG 7 is still a beta
version, although the final version is due out any day.

I have used AntiVir for some time and I really trust it. I download
upgrades almost daily. However they're manually done. No big deal, I'm
retired and have the time.

Norton, before they went crazy with mine, had automatic downloads as they
became available.

I have a question on AVG I haven't seen answered. Being lazy as sin, does
AVG have auto downloads?

AVG6 Free supposedly did, but it didn't work well enough to count on it, so
I always manually downloaded updates. The new AVG7 Free, which is currently
still in beta (testing) release, however, has GREATLY improved automatic
updating. I am using it now, and am very happy with it. You set it to check
for updates at a certain time each day, and if you happen to not be online
at that time during the day, it automatically checks as soon as you do go
online. It's worked flawlessly for me so far, and it can be set (in its
Update Manager's "Properties") to perform its updating function entirely
without bothering you as it does so.

Thank you. Clear answer. Around the last of November when it is issued I
will try it.

Gosh, I hope its less bloated than the commerical 7.0 which is so much
resource hungrier than commercial or free 6.

AVG7 Free (beta) isn't much of a resource drain at all on my system (which
is only Pentium II, Win98se). Quite acceptable, I'd say; especially as most
folks have much more powerful computers than I do.

I don't write much here but I don't understand why there are 2 long
threads on this? The section on the freeware version of AVG is clear
and straightforward. Why is there all this confusion?

I agree. Seems pretty clear to me too.

Is it possible to disable the personal email scanner? In other words,
is it an option or are you forced to use it?

Bye, Francesco

Many people says, that a Beta of AVG7 is the solution...
I tried to install it today, but have some problems.

When I click on a link in a newsgroup, (like the one above) nothing
happens. If I try to click a link on a webpage to open another (for
dl-ing ex) nothing happens... and the version 7 is a (big) bit more
consuming than ver. 6 is... so for now, I just uninstalled it and
reinstalled ver 6...

You should be able to by going to Properties for "E-mail Scanner" and
clicking the "Disable plugin" button.
