Emulators

OMG Flops, so many memories come back from seeing that post above! :D

I have an N64 Emulator for playing Goldeneye = awesome!

Not all of the ROMS I have work well, but most do. I can't make head nor tale of some, like the 2 Populous games, can't figure out what to do.

Road Rash II, as mentioned, has really crap graphics but is worth playing for the nostalgia factor, despite the fact I can't re-program the kick function to a gamepad button.

Micro machines is really hard - all of them - I don't remember it being that hard on the Megadrive.

But most work well and I've thoroughly enjoyed playing some through again.

I played my favourite - Mickey Mouse & The Castle Of Illusion - straight through in three hours one Saturday afternoon, they don't seem as difficult now as they used to.

And now up to level 43 of 78 on Timeshift - great game :thumb:

Ok, nowt earth-shattering but fun. And enjoyment is why we play games - isn't it?

Serious gamer? Of course some people thinking gaming is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it is much more serious than that.

Nice thread, I have never tried any emulators before. Gave Flops link a try along with some Roms and what a hoot. Its a bit difficult assigning buttons on a gamepad as I don't always know what the buttons do, trial and error works.
Me question is will these work ok on a Athlon 1.4 the mobo only has on board graphics S3 I think so can not be upgraded, with XP installed ??

Tried The Adams Family and it looked great on me 24" screen.

I don't see why not, the graphics are hardly demanding are they?

Try it and see would be the option I suppose as I don't think the emulator actually installs but runs 'live' although I could be wrong on that one.

The Adams Family eh? I shall have to try that.

I haven't actually played with the emulator for a few months now but I come back to it every so often. And I do believe it may have been Ian who pointed me at it originally, a couple of years ago.

Guess I could try. Have a clean install and did not want to mess it up hence the Q. Any good tips on configuring a gamepad or is it just trial and error ?

As I remember the gamepad controls are set for each game with only the slightest variation allowed, usually between the 3 primary buttons.

3 buttons  I'm using one similar to this, multi switch on the left, 4 buttons on the right and a trigger each side. Works but still at the guess work stage.

:D

I got missing bits of knowledge when it comes to ordinary stuff most folk know about concerning pc's.

Funny what you come across when it is raining.

"That idea started him on his project of creating a "black box" studded with sockets and ports that a huge variety of controllers can be plugged into to play the older games as they were intended.

The tricky part of making the black box was not the outputs from the old controllers. Most of them, said Mr Qureshi, were quite straightforward. The stumbling block was the connection from black box to PC.

"The USB side was tricky," he said. "There's a lot of documentation for it but when it comes to doing it practically you find out very quickly there are a lot of quirks to it."

Despite this, he has finished the first black box and has made the schematics available on the web for all to see and use. The next step, he said, would be the creation of a kit of parts and instructions that people could buy to build their own."

I think it really depends on the game and how well youre making your way thru it....take for instance i'm stuck in GOW2d , i'm fed uptrying so i switched to my laptop for awhile but now i have to tackle the game again and i'm dreading it. Also there is no cheat to skip past the sticking point(Boss) so i'll just have to keep at it.
Sometimes gaming is hard work i guess.
