Hi folks,
I was thinking of using my laptop as a ps2 emulator. Everything was going fine until i realised i had to doctor the BIOS. I know my pc has a bios but dont ask me where....upstairs in the box maybe. LoL. Am i playing with fire here or am i just scared...does this look dangerous "guide on how to dump your PS2's BIOS over LAN"....i'd really like to play PS2 games on my laptop but am afraid i'll fry it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of that.

Your link doesn't work.

If you're just changing BIOS settings - no prob - if things go awry just set them back again.

If you have to rewrite the BIOS code yourself or alter the existing code prior to flashing, imo you're playing with fire.

You usually enter the BIOS of desktops by hitting the del key or sometiimes one of the F keys, usually F2, but I'm not sure about laptops.

Sorry flops that wasnt a link...it was just text that i copied so you understand what i intend to do.....i will probably go ahead and try seeing as how i can probably just go back to the start again....I will do a back up and a bit more reading ont subject and then try...i'm just scared about the BIOS end of things...i usually learn the hard way.
I will keep ya posted but for now its the champions league.
Thanks for your support.

How bad could i really screw things up installing stuff ?? Surely if i have a good back up disc i can take a few chances without doing too much damage....it's still under warranty too..Do you know of a good sandbox type of software that i could dick around with and keep my OS intact ?? I have noticed you seem to be very pro penguins and was wondering would linux be what i need ??

It's absolutely nothing to do with the OS, this is to do with the very core of the computer itself.

How bad could you mess it up?

Bad enough that your computer won't even POST.

That means it's dead. Knackered. Kaput. It no go.

You'll have to order a BIOS chip from the manufacturer and then, if you're lucky and know what you're doing, swap it out in your laptop. Or pay somebody an arm and a leg to do it for you.

What makes you think a laptop will play PS2 games effectively anyway? Laptops are not really ideal for gaming.

It'll end in tears I tell you.

Don't do it Zed.......As the others say thre is no way back if you screw the BIOS......Recovery disks and Back up disks don't mean didly aquat when you have a fubared Bios.....

You could try the above as an alternative to virtual machine software. Seems to work fine but I have only played a little bit with it.
Penguins are indeed friendly. Are they better than Windows ? Depends on where you are coming from and where you want to get to.

You is messing with the BIOS ... you don't need a HD, OS or software ... He is trying to make the laptop into a playstation ... better off chucking the lappie in the bin & buy a PS, it'll be cheaper than attempting to feck-up the BIOS of the laptop. :D

People are always trying to save money ... sometimes it don't pay to get out of bed. ;)

I know and you that messing with the bios is dangerous waters and lots of folk have told Z that. M ereply was to his Q about sandboxes.
Urmas's link looks good for a software fix to his problem,

Why anyone would want to do something like that is beyond me, but each to thier own.

Aye, I have a Sega Genesis Emulator and loads of ROMS, plays all the old Sega games a treat and works with my Logi gamepad controller.

And unlike the old game cartridges, the emulator has a save game function.

Mickey Mouse Castle Of Illusion; Road Rash; X-Men; Chuck Rock; Aladin; Sonic and loads more - memory lane indeed :D

If anybody wants a link I'll search it out.

Yes I used to use the Amiga UAE emulator and it was brilliant

IK+, paper boy and Lotus
memory lane indeed

The one I'm using is called the Fusion 351 Emulator which is probably V3.51 of the emulator listed
Here

It looks as though there's a newer version available but the one I have works flawlessly, I've used it for a couple of years at least now.

I tried a couple of others - gens was one of them - but they both had glitches.

The Fusion emulator runs straight from the *.exe file, there's no installation as such and I think it only works in Windows up to XP, I haven't tried it in Vista.

There are loads of ROMS out there but as it's still technically illegal to download them I won't post any links here.

A Google should bring you lots of results.

There are instructions in a readme file with the download but it's very simple to use. I would highly recommend a gamepad.

Some games look exceedingly dated now, Road Rash II being one such.

Here's a pic of the ROMS I have:

To date i have burnt out 2 ps1's and 2 ps2's. I also fried the drive in my first xbox but MS replaced the drive free. A trip down memory lane man, i tells ya.
Thanks for your help.
