DVD Rewriter, which one do you have?

Most DVDRW's still have a 2mb buffer, it's all you really need for most things.

The more expensive DVDRW's have an 8Mb buffer, which is a desirable thing to have but you pays yer money yer takes yer choice, as they say...

Flopps do you know if the 8MB Buffer models are much more expensive??

I'll have a look around the net later to see if i can find one

(I'm Thinking of the New PC...... Nothing but the best .. Sir)... lol

P L E X T O R

;)

yep .. definately a supurb piece of kit... ive just been looking at the PX-712SA..
It has "Buffer Underrun Proof Technology: Stops buffer underrun errors" according to the plextor's site without seeming foolish.. may i ask what a buffer under run is?... i understand that a buffer over run is when there is an overflow of information in the buffer and it goes beyond its limit causing errors...
But an Under-Run?

Buffer under-run ...

Windows is a multi-tasking operating system, meaning it can run many programs simultaneously. The CPU, however, can only do one thing at a time. To solve this problem, Windows divides the CPU time into small slices and gives each running program a short period of time to execute before the CPU is handed over to the next program. The more programs you run, the smaller each time slice gets. If the slices are too small, there may not be enough time for the burning software to fill the buffer on the CD writer. What about the hard drive? Just like the CPU, the hard drive cannot read everything at the same time. If, for example, some anti-virus software or a screen saver starts in the middle of your CD burning session, the hard drive may get occupied with other things and stop reading CD data.

Good explanation Mucks :) It's all about keeping the bucket topped up and the flow even, innit? ;)

... and a minmum 450MHz CPU (800Mhz recomended), as stated on my box. :D

Thank you very much sir... for that superb explanation :)

So.. Basically
An Over-Run is giving the pigs too much swill to eat.. that they can't eat it all

An Under-Run is giving the pigs too little swill to eat.. that they keep looking for more

He he i don't live on a farm or anything

Thanks again for helping me understand.. :)

Floppy Stockings?

Methinks Mucks & James might have a wry chuckle over that one (don't ask) :D

What was I.... Um, Golden Virginia, honest officer.....

So, you gonna go with the A108 then?

still thinking about it got to get the wireless router/modem first definetly!

after reading about this 2mb and 8mb im thinkin it mite be worth the wait. i need to back up my files onto dvd's but im gona have to stick to cdrw's.

also thinking that possibly when there are lots of 16speed rewriters the 8speed prices will go down hopefully.!!

thats the good time to grab a 8speed rewriter!

I have been using Plextor for a long time and I think there is nothing out there which can beat the Plextor except competitors pricing. Plextor drives are never cheap and they do not sell them cheap to compete with others, they really do not have to, they already know that the three stooges out there would buy them even if it is double the price compared to what their competition is selling at. Go for P L E X T O R with your eyes closed. You will never regret it.

When I bought my first unit I was later able to upgrade it's firmware four times and one being major upgrade which actually changed the speed of DAE from 24x to 32X. How many makers support their loyal customers with such upgrades? None to my knowledge!

The three stooges for your information I referred to are Mucks, Flops and yours truly! :D

3 months on and ive gone for the Pioneer DVR-108 16x DVD±RW! After 6 months of research ive decided on Pioneer to be my saviours! Wise choice I HOPE!

getting it for 50 nicker! around three months back i was waiting will it come below the 50 quid mark but ive given up i got it just over 50 quid.

here comes the questions for u lot:

I have a pc with Nero 6. in this pc there is just a cdrw. do i need to unistall this Nero and resintall in order to get the DVD RW Function on my new drive? Or will Nero pick up on the fact that I have a DVD RW Drive.

The other PC has Nero version 5, im going to stick with it, when this version starts it gives me the option to click on DVD but obviously i cant do that rite now! but will I automatically be able to select this option once the DVD RW drive has been installed?

sorry if this questions been asked be4. im just so lazy at looking back at things ive read!

thanks everyone.

Nero 6 should recognise your DVDRW once it's installed. You should then have the option to burn either a CD or DVD, they're both different drop down menus.

There have been reported problems with Nero 5 & the 108 ... try it and see.

Nero 6 has no problems.

Make sure you have the latest updat to 5, it may be ok.

;)

thanks

i noticed that nero 6 has this warning message of incompatability that comes up with sp2. but it hasnt caused any problems yet!

nero 6 is so sweet!

Downloading and applying the latest updates from Nero will stop this message appearing.

Well worth doing, so do it ;)

It will stop the message, yeah. But not the problem of it restarting the computer when you want to use it.
