DVD Copyright to Hard drive

For what it is worth I agree with you and your reason for wanting to edit
the movie is a good one.
Still illegal but understandable in your case.

Alternative:

Pause the DVD when you are playing it when you are close to the spot. Then
FF, and continue playing it. Or, cough really loud a few times.
