Installed OK here; quite a nice looking app.

Don't know what caused the BSOD (first on my win98SE in about three years).
Tried it again with my fingers crossed, worked fine. Didn't think it was
better than xplorer²-lite for my needs though. This thread has been very
informative, but the more I play with the different programs mentioned here,
the more I'm thinking of switching back to xplorer²-lite. Most programs I
tried are great, but add no new features I have need for.

Turbo Navigator is a popular Norton Commander type explorer:

I've tried 'em all (including others not yet mentioned) but I always come
back to
Total Commander. Unfortunately, it's $hareware, and thus *OT*.
However, it's (IMHO) the best and infinitely extensible with a raft of
freeware plugins.
If you only ever buy one file manager, this is the one and it's not
expensive at all.
***for the record, I've NO association with it***

LOL... I get them often enough to be considering getting an app to
change the colour :-)

xplorer²-lite looks really nice. It feels more stable than Free
Commander or A43.
It doesn't seem to have a shredder or ability to print folder
contents?
I'm going to stay with it for a while, especially since I have set it
to be my default folder opener.

It seems the shredder function Is only available in the shareware version, I
use Heidi's Eraser for that, simple rightclick and erase. I'm not into
printing, but I'm sure this can be done through a DOS-command (F10) You can
copy the folder contents as text for printing Ctrl-A Alt-C.

Are there any other explorer alternatives with duplicate panes like
xplorer2-lite ? I'm happy with it so far, but would like to try
something similar.

I've not found anything as great as xplorer2, for what it's worth.
Unfortunately, it won't do Unicode on my system.

I have yet to find something that I would call The One True File
Manager. There's usually some minor but highly desirable feature on one
manager, but missing on another. For example 2xplorer appears to be
missing bookmarks, and a convenient way of launching a DOS shell.
FreeCommander has these features, but lacks the ability to copy a
path+filename to the clipboard.

I agree, it all turns out to be a matter of personal taste concerning
appearance and small feature-differences.
FYI, xplorer²-lite is the successor of 2explorer, and it does have a
bookmark option, and if you hit F10 you can enter DOS commands which is
executed in a DOS-box.

I have yet to find something that I would call The One True File
Manager. There's usually some minor but highly desirable feature

Three common features used to promote shareware file managers are:

- VFS (Virtual File System) for handling FTP.
- VFS for handling archives (zip/rar/etc).
- Built-in file viewer supporting a wide array of file formats.

Sadly there isn't a freeware FM supporting all the three features
mentioned above.
For example 2xplorer appears to be missing bookmarks, and a
convenient way of launching a DOS shell.

2xExplorer doesn't have a toolbar for bookmarks but it has a specific
menu for them ('Bookmarks') and hotkey shortcuts (control key + 0-5).

And for your second question I'm afraid 2xExplorer doesn't have a
built-in method to start a DosBox, the only solution (sort of) is the
use of a shell extension.

Absolutely. I have most of the recommendations here on my PC, but
everyday I use PowerDesk.

I agree, PowerDesk is my "must have" utility. There is a good freeware
version (probably should be called adware, but the only ad is as you
close it.) The freeware version I believe is called PD5free.exe. It was
distributed by Ontrack, but I believe V-com now has it. There is
probably a link on the pricelessware site.

It's my favorite also. PowerDesk is one of those programs you
depend on so much, you hate to part with it. It's almost worth
paying for!
