DreamScene Preview by Windows Update?

Its not advertising.

It's a free product FFS.

They are putting it out there because the community wanted at least some
version of DreamScene so they put out a rock solid build with limited
features to give the users at least a piece of what they wanted.

That's like saying that when you PreOrder a game and they give you a free
demo version that they are just advertising the game to you in order to make
you buy it and you don't want it.

You've already "bought" DreamScene, they are just giving you a preview of
how it will work.

Also Adware serves up advertisements, show me where this flashes anything
about buying windows.

As I said before, now I know you're a troll just looking for flamebait so I
will merely make this my last set of posts to you until you actually have
something intelligent to say.

But it will install both patches without prompting if you set it to
automatically download. You're wrong. If you configure OneCare to ask
first, you will still be green if you skip that update. If you have OneCare
in its default condition of not asking, then you will absolutely get that
update.

Dale

It wasn't released. DreamScene is not release software. So, the preview,
at best, is an advertisement - a promotion. That makes Windows Update
adware.

A person has to take a deliberate action to get the preview.
Add to that typical users will normally not have Ultimate.
Most adware sneaks in piggy backing on something else or deceptively
getting installed by the user.

Ok, I was wrong. Live OneCare doesn't automatically download, it
automatically checks for downloads and tells you that you need X number of
patches. If you accept its offer to download at that time, it will
automatically download DreamScene without giving you any information about
what you're downloading. OneCare said it had 2 downloads, and asks if you
want to download now. One was a security patch and one was DreamScene
"Preview". You have to take specific action to find out that the downloads
it is attempting are nothing more than a promotion. Same problem, as I see
it, just not quite as bad.

Most users will, and until this incident occurred should, simply download
the patches offered and not try to analyze them. Most users are not capable
of making the decision about what to download. That's why social
engineering attacks almost always work for installing malwre. Yet, adding
promotional downloads to Windows Update makes it clear that users do need to
review and analyze what is being offered by Microsoft.

And spyware is not, at least not to me, defined by whether or not it is
covert in its installation. Most spyware and even Gator's password snatcher
were installed after full notification to the user. But users don't know
enough to make the decisions about what to allow. They see a prompt that
says, "you must install this program to view this site" and they install the
program. You ask them about how they got spyware and they say, "I never
installed anything." You ask them about the program that is on their
computer and the answer is, "Well, I had to install that to see that site I
wanted to see."

Users are just not capable of making intelligent decisions about what to
install. And that's why Windows Update should not be used for anything
except updating Windows. And Microsoft Update should not be used except to
update non-Windows applications. Neither should be used for promotional
purposes - that way, users could safely leave Windows Update set to
automatic and could take the recommendations from Live OneCare.

Dale

Then it is One Care you have a problem with and not Windows/Microsoft
Update.
I have heard little good about One Care and that is Why I do not use it.
But do not blame Windows/Microsoft Update for what another program does.

"at least not to me, defined by whether or not it is covert in its
installation"
Does your definition also allow spyware to install with an undisclosed
purpose that can negatively impact the computer?
YES.
"full notification to the user"
Really?
Was the full impact made clear in advance?
Or was much research needed going beyond the fine print in the acceptance?
Another BAD comparison.

DreamScene is clearly marked "Preview" and your continuous comparisons show
your definition to be just flexible enough to suit whatever you feel at the
time.

Your problem is entirely with OneCare, deal with that and forget about
passing the blame to a component not even related to One care.

If you feel it is wrong, contact Microsoft as suggested before since it is
unlikely the correct Product Group will get your message here.
This newsgroup is not related to either Window/Microsoft Update or One Care.
My guess is you have no desire to use the appropriate channels since doing
so is only slightly more time consuming than using a newsgroup and you like
the responses that ultimately go no where without your feedback in the
correct channel.
But I could be wrong.

I disagree. It is not a free product at all. If it is free, download it on
to Vista Home Premium.

You paid for it when you paid for Vista Ultimate. Microsoft had to pay the
developers who wrote it. They have to charge money for that time. It's
built into the price.

Dale

Exactly Richard.

This is my point that I'm making.

It very clearly states that it's a preview and Dale is just a troll.

He has nothing useful to ad to any thread and he would be better off just
leaving.

I find it funny that when someone actually traps him in a corner then he
starts attacking that persons credibility.

I am not the type of person who takes that lightly.

To me my word and my credibility are everything.

Just out of curiosity Jupe since you're an MVP what sort of bad things have
you heard about OneCare?

I've been one of the permanent testers on that project for over a year now
and I'm curious about what negative things are out there.

It might help me help the team make the product better :)

Ok I will at a later time in the future when they release as a non-ultimate
product.

Oh wait I bet that's another thing you didn't know about.

Ultimate Extras are exclusive for now, but there will be a point once an
extra has been out for so long (or at least this was the plan last time I
was on campus) to release those extras as standalone "powertoys" for Vista,
but Ultimate Users get them first.

Also your mom/pop type people aren't going to buy Ultimate.

The people who buy Ultimate are the people who have top of the line machines
and who stay on the edge of cutting technology.

So let me just say this and be done with it.

If you don't want UE's then fine don't download them, but please do everyone
else a favor and shut the hell up, you're getting on more than one persons
nerves.

Your problem is entirely with OneCare, deal with that and forget about
passing the blame to a component not even related to One care.

Now, you have made a point that I can agree with.
If you feel it is wrong, contact Microsoft as suggested before since it is

But I could be wrong.

When I stated what I saw the first time, I was voicing an opinion. It
happens. Feel free to disagree.
