DreamScene Preview by Windows Update?

It seems Microsoft is deploying beta software by Windows Update now.
Windows Live OneCare informed me this morning that there are two updates my
computer "needs". First is an update for the junk e-mail filter for Windows
Mail. I agree, even though I don't use Windows Mail except for newsgroups.

The second update is Windows DreamScene Preview. I cannot believe Microsoft
is trying to get me to install beta software on a production PC. Most users
will automatically install whatever Microsoft and OneCare say.

Well, I guess they are just trying to tease us since they still can't
deliver on the promise of DreamScene.

Dale

No Dale!

They are responding the the many who are saying "Where Is It".

Quote from George Ankner:
If you knew as much as you think you know,
You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!

And Dale, the preview is not categorized as "Criticle", thus it will not be
downlaoded automatically.

Try to tease us? Yet you complain that it says that it is available? Yes, it
is in a beta form, but it does work great, and it's a nice feature to have.
And as stated before, you DON'T HAVE to install it. Windows won't
automatically install it as part of Automatic Updates.

Not to mention the fact that the build they put out was tested rigorously
for stability and is by no means what I would call beta quality.

It will be by Live OneCare.

And I still don't think beta software belongs on Windows Update.

Dale

You seem to have a misunderstanding about Windows/Microsoft Update.
It is not just for Critical or Security updates and never has been.
That is why there are options for drivers, recommended and other optional
items.
Dream Scene will not be delivered unless the user specifically asks since it
is not delivered with Automatic Update.
Vista Ultimate owners are also far from typical.

"Microsoft is trying to get me to install"
Not at all.
However Microsoft is offering a preview since many are asking for
DreamScene.
Do not confuse an offer with anything more.

Also there is no indication DreanScene is Beta.
No where did I see the word Beta and AFAIK, Microsoft always labels Beta as
such.

How about the fact that I was one of the beta testers for this particular
Extra and have run the various builds throughout the testing phase for it?

I have the ability to prove that as well if you'd like :)

"It will be"?

It's not, Ultimate Extras are not counted into OneCare.

Also another product that I beta test actively still.

Agreed Jupiter.

This is not a beta, this is a limited function demo that has been fully
tested and is rock solid.

It does not contain all of the functionality that will be available nor does
it contain all the content that will be available.

Anyone who calls a preview a beta makes no sense. That's like referring to
the office trial editions as beta software.

It is feature limited software, but they won't believe us ;)

This extra has not appears in my Windows update section of My windows Vista
ultimate. I Activated the software a while ago and have been manualy checking
for updates but it still hasnt appeared. I have updated my WSUS server as
well and the Extra update has not appeared on that as well. Any reason I am
not getting this?

Rob

No, I am not talking about betas. I am talking about "Preview". Tell me
what you know about the Preview version and how you know it.

Dale

You're wrong again. It is getting to be a habit with you.

Yes, if you have OneCare configured to automatically install updates, it
will do so - including the DreamScene "Preview". I just had the offer from
OneCare to install it on mine. And I only got the offer because I had
configured OneCare to ask before downloading. Had I not so configured
OneCare, it would have automatically downloaded DreamScene "Preview".

So, what else have you beta tested? I just want to know so I know what else
you know nothing about.

Dale

By the way. You're really making this up as you go along, right? Beta
testing of OneCare has been closed for a while. Even on Vista. I installed
OneCare release version on Vista about 2 weeks ago.

Dale

If what you made up happens to coincidentally be correct, then "Previews"
as in advertising, does NOT belong in Windows Update. Doesn't that make
Windows Update the ultimate adware?

Dale

A person has to take a deliberate action to get the preview.
Add to that typical users will normally not have Ultimate.
Most adware sneaks in piggy backing on something else or deceptively getting
installed by the user.

In the case of this preview, there is nothing hidden or deceptive about it.
The word "Preview" is also clearly in the description making it even less
likely to be installed by someone who thinks it is something else.

Do nothing and there is no way for this preview or any of the Ultimate
Extras to get on the computer.

Hopefully you let Microsoft know what you think.
Posting in these newsgroups is fine if you only want other users to see your
opinion, but this is the wrong place if you want the correct people at
Microsoft to get your message.

Yes I know what you are talking about that is my point.

This was rigorously tested before it was released.

You're really just out to not listen to anyone on this it seems so no more
posts from me.
