dreaming of 8.5" x 13" paper

Hello measekit
An odd size. Like legal. Maybe for wide horizontal scenics but the size
is not appealing.

Hmmm. 4" x 6" is the most popular size here in the US for photo prints.
That's the key thing here: you'd get four nice 4x6 prints out of a sheet of
this stuff. Right now you get just three 4x6 prints out of a piece of
8.5x11.
Also: DSLRs have a 2x3 ratio, and would love to be able to print out 8" x
12".
Nothing unnaturally wide about that; it's the shape of the image as captured
by the DSLR sensor.

Doesn't seem odd at all to me.

Then again, odd is clearly in the eyes of the beholder.

Hello John
Would you print the four 4x6 prints touching on the inside edges, or have
a
small border around each print on the sheet?

Small border around each, so I can neatly Rotatrim the four prints.
Would you cut out the four prints, or leave them on the 8.5" x 13" paper?

Cut them out. I just want to get four 4x6 prints from a sheet, rather than
the three that fit on an 8.5x11 sheet.

Nope. A single paper mill could be sufficient.

If you are using a printer that does 4x6 borderless prints it is much easier
to precut the paper to 4x6 with a paper cutter that has an adjustable guide
bar. Using the guide bar, the cutting is a no brainer and you can cut lots
of sheets in a very short time. Cuting the images apart after printing
several on a page requires more attention and precise cuts. This is one of
the reasons I got rid of my older Epson printer and bought a Canon i960
which prints borderless 4x6, 5x7, and 8.5x11 pictures. This has really cut
down my printing/paper cutting time and provided much better results as a
bonus.

Why not buy the larger format epson paper and cut it to two 8.5x13 sheets
for the larger format prints you want to print? Granted that there is some
waste, but I don't imagine that all your prints are in that format, and a
little additional cost is certainly justified for those few special prints
you want to produce.

for everyday printing of 4x6's (my wife wants these for her photo albums and
to send to relatives) I am using Costco's Kirkland glossy photo paper with
either Canon OEM or MIS inks for fabulous results. 30 or 40 minutes at the
paper cutter provides me with 375 4x6 sheets for about five cents apiece, so
I don't really care about the small scraps of waste that I have left.

Hello Pam

Yes. I use the Epson 13x19 ColorLife paper and others. They're
quite wonderful. And, yes, as noted in my original email, I can
cut one of those sheets and get a pair of 9.5 x 13 sheets.

But I don't want to cut. I want the manufacturers to realize that,
for printing photos, 8.5" x 13" is an excellent size choice, BETTER
for most PHOTOGRAPHIC purposes that 8.5" x 11".

But cutting is why they make paper cutters. Now you are limiting
yourself to what the manufacture makes. Get a good printer which take
wide rolls and print and cut to what ever format you want.

I've made some prints in the past 3x14 because that was the most
effective image.

Does the roll paper retain a curl after printing?

That's what a paper press is for...
