downloading binaries from Newsgroups

What Version are you using?
2.6

Header sort in Version 2.6 is lightening fast.

Not here it isn't. 800mhz, 256 RAM.

OK, headers download and set themselves on the d/b quick enough. But in
a big group simply pressing 'new only' is enough to send PG to sleep for
a while.

Stupidly, I just tested this. I asked for a 'from' sort in a group with
about 200000 headers. It took over half an hour.

Version 2.4 (previous version) would have taken 3 or 4 hours. So 20 or
30 minutes on my 550MHz is fast.

Xnews seems to be the best for combined reading/binaries. It's
definitely the best for dial up users. Some people seem to dislike it
because it requires some hands on managing, but that's the best
feature, IMO. like to have control over what my programs are doing.

After trying some of the touted binary grabber programs, and having
them automatically start trying to download 50 files at a time over my
dial up connection, I happily went back to Xnews. If I had broadband,
I might have a different view.

Yep, I use Xnews and like it too.

Hit filter/hide non binaries
Hit filter/hide incomplete binaries
Right click and hit queue all OR ctrl+space
Hit decode (the blue cube at the bottom OR F4)

That should download all the binaries, one after another.

What's easier than that?

Xnews is also a no-install app.

In what ways is it better than Dialog ?

For my 'binary' needs, which are few because I'm on dialup, there is only
this reason: PowerGrab can connect again to the server and automatically
resume the download after a disconnection. I was searching another client
for binaries only for that. Among all I tried PowerGrab IMHO is the best.

So there isn't a Dialog "script" that can do that ? Have you logged
that as a request in Mantis ?

Regards, John.

So can Xnews.

Xnews can't automatically retry the server, which is why I began using
PowerGrab. But it depends on your news server...auto-retry is required on
BugGulp, but not on many other servers.

That said, while Xnews is my regular newsreader of choice, I still prefer
PowerGrab for binaries, regardless of server. I just find it easier and
more efficient somehow. YMMV.

A dedicated binary app will always be the better choice for serious
binary work.
For occasional browsing any client is OK.

===================

Google around for Gravity. I used XNews before and traded up to Big G.
Gravity is pretty much automatic for assembling all parts of a binary,
and won't bother if a part is missing.
