Hi

Any easy to use programs for downloading binaries from Newsgroups?

I'm trying Grabit from www.shemes.com at the moment without to much
success. Are there any others?

Cheers Mark

Try Xnews. Some champion Grabit but I found it to be extremely frustrating.

GrabIT is about as easy as they come. What issues are you having?

I have to agree with elaich. Grabit is extremely frustrating.

All I seem to be getting is txt files, even when I grab multiple parts
of a file.

In which case they have been encoded in some manner that GrabIt cannot
decode. Probably mime (see Q #5 in the FAQ). Since GrabIt decodes
uuencode and yenc which comprise the majority of posts, blame the poster
for using an oddball format and yourself for not being knowledgeable
about the program rather than blaming GrabIt.

Moreover, you shouldn't even be *seeing* multiple parts. One of the
nice thing about GrabIt is that it shows you split up posts as one
item...you don't have to select multiple, just one.

I suspect you could alleviate your frustration by reading the GrabIt
tutorials and FAQ. One thing sure, it functions as well as any binary
downloader and is far easier to use than most.

What build of Zone Alarm are you running?

MIME encoding is not oddball or uncommon; your post, in which you just
implied it an oddball format, is in fact MIME'd, albeit not multipart.

The deficiency is with GrabIt, not with the posters using MIME. How
big the deficiency is depends on the downloading user's needs.
Hopefully, GrabIt will add the capability at some point.

Another satisfied Power-Grab user. I've found it the easiest sttraight out
of the box.

Ditto. I've tried it after having read Fred's post. Now, for downloading
binaries, I'm another satisfied Power-Grab user :-)

Xnews does a good job with binaries. All the freeware binaries newsreaders
I tried were lacking.

PowerGrab is wonderful. It has a few quirks, and a few failings but has
been my first choice binary client for years.

I can't find quirks, until now.
I love its lightness and easiness, it's the better binary client I could
find!

Xnews seems to be the best for combined reading/binaries. It's definitely
the best for dial up users. Some people seem to dislike it because it
requires some hands on managing, but that's the best feature, IMO. like to
have control over what my programs are doing.

After trying some of the touted binary grabber programs, and having them
automatically start trying to download 50 files at a time over my dial up
connection, I happily went back to Xnews. If I had broadband, I might have
a different view.

Quirk: 'Life' sort instead of 'Date'. This is a pain and I have never
got used to it.
Major weakness: It doesn't handle incompletes at all and it really
should.
Major weakness: No 'sample' function. One 'gets all' or 'gets new' so it
is no real good for browsing new groups.
Weakness: Header sort is slow.

But it's light, efficient, totally stable, has some seriously good
functions, crash recovery is usually very good.
I use three binary clients - the other two are buyw*re; PG is my
preferred of the three. And I have tried many others.
