Hmmm... it seems likely from this discussion that it actually is an
overheating problem. I placed an extra fan in the top of my computer to
help ventilate. Maybe I should consider using a watercooling device, too.
I know the computer is not getting excessively hot, though. I keep an eye
on my temps using SmartDoctor (for what it is worth). I have turned off
fastwrites, but still having the "speckling" problem...

Look at RMA'ing the card first. Had a 9800Pro with the 'sparkles', sent it
back and no probs since with the replacement in the same setup. On the
RMA'd card it looked to me like the heatsink wasnt properly bedded. It WAS
a heat problem but was caused by the manufacturer. Shaun.

You shouldn't need to do that stuff.
All of my games on 9800pro with fastwrites on and AGP 8x had no problems

I have a Radeon 9800XT and am having problems playing Doom3. The whole
screen is full of static. It seems to be in a checkerboard pattern,

Checkerboard? That happens when some pipilines are defective. This is why
some R350s have blocked pipelines and are sold as R9800SEs. When you
soft-mod the deactivated pipilines to work you usually get the checkerboard
pattern in 3d apps.

So - its a faulty card no doubt about it.
