Don't worry, I'm most likely only here to post this one (somewhatO.T.) message.

For those
who've never experienced it, it's pretty much the same noise the heads
make when they park as the computer is shut down or goes into a lower
power state.

In the summertime (high heat and humidity), my ribbon cable connection
sometimes goes bad and I have to open the box and pull it off and on a few
times. The drive makes the same sound. More of a "doinking" sound, I'd say.

Maybe newer WD drives are not as well-made as earlier ones?

My old 1996 2.5 GB drive, running daily but accessed seldom in the
past 5 years, still works fine. My old XT had a WD that worked fine,
and my current 15 GB WD has been working fine in daily use since 2000.
I've had really good luck with them.

since i'd dealt wiht newer and older wd, and a deathstar of same era, i've read of these.

as well as i recall reading, teh deathstars were the early 7200 rpm 15 or 20 gb drives, circa early 2000.

the flaky wd's were a little later, early 2001 i think? (and 5400 rpm)

also i thought that seagate bumped up the warranty to 5 yr, (while wd went to 3 yr and maxtor remained at 1 yr.??)

it seems the HD mfr would have an idea of reliability from accelerated tsting, but the system assmeblers might not be informed
by hd mfrs?

Hi John,

Yes off topic, actually very.

I see you have also posted to alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt

A far better group for your post, and I think the responses there
have been more imformative to you than here. A *very* helpful group
about hardware. Kinda like this one about freeware.

Not so off-topic, actually. He was warning that it might be a good idea
to steer clear of Maxtor drives if you have a large archive of freeware
that you store on HDDs.

You're right, though, about the pc-homebuilt group being more
informative (and knowledgeable, I'd add). Why is it that some people on
this group are so quick to criticise? And it's the destructive type of
criticism - putting people down rather than offering anything sensible
or helpful.

In my case the only drive I've had fail was a Maxtor about a year old.
The local computer store tells me that Maxtors are known to fail.

"Not so off-topic" Obviously the OP had an agenda. If I would post a
comment that said "you shouldn't use Nvidia video cards to view freeware",
would you say that is off-topic. Or how about slamming Sound Blaster when
playing audio from Freeware.

What's good about this NG is that I don't have to wade through the BS to get
to pertinent information.

I applaud the contributors that jump on off-topic postings. I am
disappointed that more did not criticize this one.

If you made a case that nVidia cards or Sound Blasters had flaws that
could wipe out freeware archives, as the OP did, at least there would
be a case for calling it on topic. But, yeah, the case is at best
tenuous.

My favorites are the "I know this is not about freeware, but I thought
I'd ask you guys . . . " posts.

But I've yet to see a group where all posts are on topic, and you're
right that there's not much off topic stuff to wade through here
(usually).
