Don and Vuescan

This is exactly why I normally just delete the daily summary that I
receive from this group. I don't contribute to this forum because of
the continual harping about Vuesscan. I do scan the topics to see if
there is anything of interest. But I am usually disappointed.

I'd like to see suggestions on how to improve scans (other than
uninstall Vuescan). Comparisons and recommedations for workflow would
be nice, too. But I can't imagine that will happen - all problems in
the world will be attributed to Vuescan.

I'd also like to know more about Silverfast. But that might take
bandwidth away from Vuescan trashing.

You just did.

No, I just gave you some background you may not have been aware of in
a sidebar.

I do not respond to offensive messages with the sole purpose to
provoke.

However, I do respond to content and some have tried misusing that but
such misuse gets exposed very quickly.

After this many years on the net the only place I've found
that's legitimate for moderated groups are "professional
research groups", or academic groups.

Yes, I agree that there may be use for moderation in very (!)
specialized groups.
I've seen all to many groups add a moderated group only to
see the moderated group eventually end up very one sided
with dissenting views squelched.

Yes, there is already too much belly button staring going on ... I
like the potential cross fertilization when people with different
backgrounds start to share thoughts on a common subject.

Another issue is that one would need to frequent yet another group for
more general info. Afterall, most of us don't want to specifically
read/discuss about VueScan but about scanning. It just happens that
VueScan is apparently very popular amongst scanning folk, as are Epson
flatbeds, and Nikon filmscanners.

Excellent moderated Yahoo groups deal with flatbeds, wet mounting,
Epson printers, HP printers, B&W inkjet, Nikon 5000, Minolta 5400 etc
etc etc. None are plagued by people who contribute nothing, just show
off by trashing the tool in question. The most annoying participants
actually do use the particular tools and provide substantive
contributions.

These moderated Yahoo groups exist to improve the results of people who
use the technology in question. In other words, all are populated by
people with good intentions who are trying to learn or help each other.

There are dozens of Vuescan experts/enthusiasts on various Yahoo
sites...plenty of them... its no loss when one is vanished due to bad
intentions.

There's no politics here and Don isn't a dictator nor does he show any
signs of aspiring to be one. And I don't think this NG is about
"erlfare" either unless I have missed a few relevant posts.
Then why mention it at all? You're pretty insulting by bringing this up.

I expressly mentioned it was a metaphor, which always have to do with
abstraction, a concept not in fashion today obviously.

Everything you answered shows me that you are not interested in the
whats and whys but only in keeping the pot boiling. Some of your
comments again remind me much of the way Don writes and argues -
looking reasonable but actually missing the point (I am convinced it's
on purpose).

You know, I've forgotten one crucial aspect to ignoring people's
messages: my time and interests. I am too old with surely not enough
time left to read everything from everyone.

PS: I'd really like people to use some kind of marker on which to
filter them. If I use your phony e-mail address I may filter messages
from people accidentally using the same uninventive synonym [this was
the first time I deliberately insulted you or someone else in this
thread; hope you find it]. Only trolls make it hard for others to
filter them ...

I haven't read this group for a while but I am saddened to find out
that Ed is gone. Whether you like VueScan or not, the loss of developer
explanations here is a net loss to this newsgroup. Not all developers
will stick their necks out in a public forum. Given all of the years of
Usenet characters that Ed _was_ able to put up with, whoever or
whatever drove him away after years of participation must have been
truly repulsive and unfair.

I think moderation can be useful when it is very lighthanded.
Photo.net uses this reasonably successfully to delete abusive posts,
spam, ad-hominem attacks, and other drivel that detract from the
content of the forums. Moderation forces people to be responsible, for
while the moderators don't generally intervene, they will if things get
out of hand.

I find the archives of this forum to be more useful than the current
posts, as there isn't as much of people posting problems and
trouble-shooting them as a group as before. That's most useful to me.
Theoretical scanner technology discussions are fine, but the Vuescan
flame-wars are truly pointless. I'm sorry for my part in perpetuating
them, as this thread makes it clear that it is really dominated by a
troll army of one.

Can anyone explain how to set up a kill file for people accessing the
group via the web:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.periphs.scanners/

Thanks,
Roger

I couldn't agree more. I look in here every few months and still find Don
ranting about Vuescan. Nothing new, nothing to aid productivity.

Not quite...

What drove him away was his inability to fix a particular Vuescan bug.

He basically ran away from exasperated Minolta owners:

The "rude" messages were: "Fix the bug or give us our money back".

He did neither, shouted obscenities for a while, and then ran away.

Now, apparently, he spends his time lurking and sending threatening
messages to Vuescan users who dare to complain about Vuescan bugs by
telling them they've been "blacklisted" - whatever that means...
