i did but the first one i downloaded was bad.. so that kinda disapointed me :P
There's nothing 'bad' about any of those programs.
If you have nothing then you need something to keep the cr*p out.

Whch one was that and how was it bad?

You're the only one I know of who's had a problem with any of them. Perhaps it was a corrupted download, it happens.

But, you know, suit yourself, maybe you'd like to pay for something instead.

Back to the what do you run question.

Browse using Firefox (always safer than Explorer)
Zone alarm (Firewall - though I've been thinking of changing this to kerio as I like the functionality)
Spyware blaster (passive protection)
Spybot-Search and Destroy (some passive protection + teatimer registry protection)
Adaware
AVG
Microsoft spyware beta (used to be Giant)
Hardware Firwall on wireless router (Netgear) WEP encoded
Also as its my laptop its not on 24/7.

You still didn't say which one it was but I think I remember now, think it was Avast you had problems with. Hmm.

Ok, then try Antivir.

Hmm. Ok. Well, in that case I don't think I can personally recommend anything for you.....

i need my norton 2005 back!
my bro has it..
we paid for it but somehow it said something about 30 days left when we paid like 70 euro for it.. that's crap
and somehow i can't download microsoft antispyware beta..
it says something about a validation key..

If even one virus that detects an AV program being installed is aready on your PC, then you won't be able to install any of the known AV programs, the virus will block it. ;)

Go and use one of the on-line scanners ... google will show you the way. :D

If you can't get your head round something as simple as Antivir, perhaps you and Nortons were made for each other

that's crap

Never a truer word said - about Nortons...

i'm gonna force my bro to uninstall my norton antivirus on his comp.
maybe norton will stop complaining then

We've got a hardware firewall in the router, there's the XP one. Use Firefox. We've also got adaware and spywareblaster. Should we have anything else?

A "compliment" to AdAware is usual ... SpybotSearch&Destroy is always a handy recommendation.

MS Windows Defender is getting good reviews, once they sort out it inability to update itself on some peoples system is going to give the rest a run for their money ... I would still be, on occasions, running other anti-spyware software also.

A handy "tool" is CCleaner ... deletes the rubbish left behind from all sorts of things. Remember to UN-tick the box so as NOT to load Yahoo Toolbar, it ain't needed.

We use AVG :o forgot that one. It does everything automatically every day.

We had Spybot before we upgraded to XP, it didn't ever find anything.

We've set Ff to delete everything when it's turned off, and also get rid of everything IE seems to store by default, even though it isn't being used.

What does CCleaner remove?

It does what it says on the 'tin' ... removes all the "crap" you did not know existed ... try it, its free, but heed my warning when installing NOT to install Yahoo Toolbar.

oh, AVG ain't the smartest AV on the block ... AntiVir beats it hand-over-fist, free too ... but hey, whatever you like is better than non at all. ;)

Viruses, or shall I say "True Viruses" are quite uncommon these days, what we see more of is Trojans & Worms, not to mention spyware ... a good AV will stop these also infecting your PC ... :)
