Do All DVD-RAM Drives use Those Cartridges?

Actually two things... Can I burn a file bigger than 2GB onto a DVD
RAM disc? Also, do all DVD-RAMS use those Wang Chung era cartridges?
Bad memories of 1x CD-ROMs, Vanilla Ice and Tandy arise when I even
think about getting one. Are there any DVD-RAMs out there that don't
require those God awful things?

There are only a few DVD burners (LG) that support DVD-RAM, and none use caddies.

If you format FAT32, the limit is 4GB. UDF 1.* is too.

Perfect! Time to shove off to ebay for an LG brand drive.
Can I format these to NTFS? What about ext3?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but something that is somewhat durable, lots
of space, easily written to know as the perfect storage solution? Why
in Gods name aren't these things more popular? I don't think CDW
sells DVD-RAM's. If demand would be higher, production costs would be
forced go to down, therefore the price would also go down.

What am I missing?

What abot dual layer? Are most LG drives 9.4GB dual later?

Oneother thing... Does Windows XP have native support for DVD-RAM's?
Will I have to run something like Adaptec's UDF utility to make it work?

Dunno.

Nope, they arent that big.

Pretty poor value media.

DVD-RAM will never be anything like the volume of DVD RW

See above.

DL, yes, but its not 9.4G

I can live with that price. Hell, I used to spend that much on ZIP
discs back in 1997. I still have then and they still work. The ZIP
drive is in a box though.

I have an LG4163b, which I do like a lot, issues with DVD-RAM:

Max write speed is 5x, finding media rated above 3x is difficult in
the US....and 5x rated media tends to run over $9 apiece.

Also, with most software, the Drive tends to default to running
immediate read/verify of every block as it writes, so even when
writing at 5x, speed is closer to 3x. This is great for data
integrity, but....

otoh, the reliability of this media seems to be easily 1 or 2 orders
of magnitude better than any other RW media....

Okey doke. I don't know how much good that will do, but i signed the
petition.

I wish there was a way to get Google groups to quote messages.

and there we go! One extra step, but its free so I'm not complaining.

Interesting.
I never really thought RW was that unreliable. Hopefully this stuff
gets more popular as time goes on. I thinkit will.

and I stand corrected, in the last week several places have finally
started stock 5x Maxell media (including Provantage) at under $4
apiece...:-)

I understand it's becoming rather popular in Japan and the Far East as
a medium for editing video and audio....

Thats still pretty lousy value.

More strictly it is used by some standalone DVD recorders etc.

If you can, as advertised, actually get over 100,000 utterly reliable
rewrites out of a disk... the value is not unreasonable considering
currently available options.

That stuff is always implausibly over stated.
the value is not unreasonable considering currently available options.

I dont need the bullet proof reliability with DVD media because
I get that a different way, using duplicate media formats.

And DVD RWs have plenty enough rewrites for my backup purposes.

So I would be paying more for something I dont actually use with DVD-RAM.

And if something is not useful to Rod or needed by Rod, then it's,
obviously, 'lousy value" for everyone.

Sigh... We really need to start a separate group JUST for Rod, Ron and
Sammy...let them go at it for eternity .. Rod and Ron can desperately
attempt to prove which one is 'bigger' and Sammy can just explain why
they are both Liars and Frauds... and everyone else in every other
group would be spared....
