displaying 1280x1024 picture in 1600x1200 LCD by utilizing only the 1280x1024 pixels?

What video card do you have? This is a function that should be an option in
the video card settings. It should say something like used fixed pixel
ratio in the options somehwere.

Radeon x800 pro and 9700 pro.

I've encountered several that give you the option between stretching a low-res
image and displaying it in true size with black borders all around. RTFM.

No luck there. My LCD doesn't support this. Still, it gives me an idea
on what to look for next time I'm in the market for an LCD

Check if your monitor allows you to disable stretching. If not, then go
into the ATI display driver control panel, set "scaling" from "monitor"
to "gfx card" (can't tell you the exact checkbox names because at the
moment I don't have an ATI card by hand), and then disable image stretching.

I looked but I can't find any feature that would resemble what you
describe. Not sure if it's not there or I just can't find it. Thanks
anyway.

Can this be done?

My Sony LCD whose native resolution is 1920x1200 gives me options how to
display images of non-native resolutions. I can choose whether or not to
stretch it. Probably, your monitor doesn't give you such options.

Check the manual online before you buy; this feature often isn't listed
anywhere else.

Out of curiosity, what LCD do you have?

Have you tried going into the advanced properties, selecting Displays,
then selecting the LCD. On my Syncmaster 204B there is an option to
Scale Image to Panel Size. Maybe this is what you are looking for.

This is a reason why all LCDs are not equal :-) My two high-end LCDs (NEC &
SONY) both give me an option to stretch lower-res images or not to stretch.
However, I always stretch lower-res images (e.g., games) on them because
they (especially my Sony) are so good at interpolating that I hardly notice
any distortion whatsoever.

This is not a function of the video card. It simply sends 1600x1200 or
1280x1024 signal. That said, it is a function of the monitor how to process
the imcoming video signal (i.e., to stretch or not to do so).

Samsung 192MP. However, it isn't very important that this monitor does
what I'm asking. I'm more concerned with the monitor that will be my
next purchase. Now that I know what feature I need, I can shop around
smarter.
