After reading http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html
I find it amazing the driver mfgs can even make a driver that will
function in Vista!

You need to ask the question if anything in that article (I'm not going to
call it a paper) is true. The answer is no.

I didn't comment on on the on the poster in any way - I only pointed out
that the answer was a little harsh. For the record I will also add that the
answer was unhelpful, meaningless and borderline stupid.

Good for you

Ok since none of the other responders EVEN REMOTELY addressed you question, I
will attempt to answer with what I know. I have vista Ultimate x64. I began
having the same error when playing BF2142. I was losing my mind trying to
figure out what was causing it, and pretty much went through every LAME
"sollution" found on the web. It has been about 5 mos, and five nvidia
driver versions later, and guess what...I still get it from time to time. I
am pretty sure that Microsoft (who promised a gaming OS) could care less, I
know for sure that Nvidia could care less, and I am absolutely convinced that
there is not ONE complete sollution for this problem.

What has helped my system, however, is to turn down my RAM settings to cool
my chipset. I am currently running an E6420 core 2 duo on an Asus P5N32-E
Sli with 4 GB of DDr2-800 RAM, and an 8800 GT ACS3. The other thing that has
become a catch 22 is that I cannot run any 3rd party vendor software like
Rivatuner 2.4 because of the driver signing issue with vista. Therefore, I
can not increase my fan speeds to help cool my chipset which is overheating
because I can't cool it with Rivatuner. VISCIOUS CYCLE brought on by
MICROSOFT controlling everything we do on OUR systems, and 3rd party vendors
not getting their software signed to run on microsoft vista OS'es.

Basically people, we are getting screwed by microsoft and all the other
software manufacturers. I have a creative SB audigy2 ZS gamer that STILL
does not have FULL drivers for Vista x64. iTunes WILL NOT work with Vista
x64 and I just bought an iPhone. In order to use an iPhone, you have to use
iTunes. SEE MY FRUSTRATIONS????!!!!!! I have sent requested to Microsoft,
Creative, Nvidia, Asus, and Intel. Noone, after all this time since Vista
released, has done anything to correct these issues.

Basically, everyone that bought Vista to game on is going to have major
problems. Everyone that bought Vista x64 is going to have MASSIVE MAJOR
PROBLEMS! Especially until SP1 and SP2 are released. ERRRRRR!!!!!

BG if you are listening, which I highly doubt, WHY DON'T YOU DO WHAT YOUR
COMPANY PROMISED! You have billions, most of us barely survive and we spend
a ton of money on your products that are VERY expensive. The least you can
do is MAKE THEM WORK.

Dude, the original poster has an HP computer, do you think they have any
idea what you're talking about? I mean they might, but I think you lost them
when you said BF2142 and "DDr2-800 RAM"

Run XP or linux, give your heart a break or you're gonna die from stress.

Vista 64, press F8 during boot up, turn off Driver Signing. That should help
with your catch 22.

iPhone, take it back, if it doesn't work, why keep it? Buy an XBox 360. ;)

FYI, I don't think "BG" is listening to you. I know if I were him I
wouldn't, because if I was BG, and I was listening to you, I'd quit my job,
oh wait BG did quit his job. MAYBE HE'S LISTENING! Quick say something.

Not that.

Turn off your computer, go outside and get some air buddy. Better yet, go
back to ms.public.windows.vista.general with the rest of the trolls.

Oh lord, I completely overlooked this. What exactly did you answer in that
rant of yours? Not once did I notice any bullet points or steps to "address
you question".

You take 20 minutes to type up this beautiful letter for "BG" and you end up
saying nothing.

Read your message BEFORE you hit send.

I do disable the driver signing, but that in itself creates other issues.
And why should I run xp or linux. Linux sux for gaming! I have built
systems and gamed for over ten years now. Microsoft has the SP1 complete,
they need to release it. I am definately NOT blaming this all on Microsoft,
I think third party vendors are not doing their job as well. Whether or not
the guy understands, I gave him an accurate portait of what is probably
occurring. Makes no difference if he bought a proprietary system or built it
himself, the issues are the same.

By the way Andy, you might be able to accept mediocre products, but I don't.
When I pay for stuff that has been released as a final product, I expect it
to work as advertised. As far as the x-box...HAVE ONE! As far as BG is
concerned...DUH! I know he isn't listening, but then again thats the WHOLE
POINT. NOONE IS! Gamers are the ones that shell out the most money for the
latest and greatest. NOT HP business users. They are content with 5 year
old POS'es. If you advertise a gaming platform, THEN MAKE IT A GAMING
PLATFORM!

Get on MSDN and download the beta of SP1.

Heh, I got my Vista for $20, and my system runs great. Sorry you're having
so many problems. As a gamer I never shell out more than I have too. As a
gamer, I'm perfectly content with 5 year old POS, if the game works on it. I
spent more money on my XBox 360 the other day than I have on my PC in the
last 4 years.

Gamers do NOT shell out the most money for PCs, some of the businesses I
work for just shelled out $2400 a pop for new Sony Viao notebooks (you know
those ones with the real thin screens?), and paid me a decent chunk of
change to set them up for them. IMO the computers are crap, they run slow as
sin dispite being the latest centrino duos, but they got portability down
pat. So don't tell me Gamers are the only ones that shell out lots of money
for the latest and greatest. Businesses that budget $5000 per computer, talk
about money... I won't even go into how much governement agencies spend on
this stuff.

I remember hearing like 5 years ago that Microsoft made over $23k per SECOND
on licensing fees alone (Pieces of paper that say you can run this program
on more than 1 computer). Assuming that number has gone up it's probably
more like $40k/second now. You think gamers spend that kind of money? Vista
has put in some neat things that (once smoothed out) could make Vista the
best gaming platform for the PC ever, and the Games for Windows branding has
taken great strides to improve labeling and system standardization for
games, but that's probably like 10% of the focus on Vista. I don't know what
the other 90% goes too, honestly there are some neat new things in Vista,
but nothing I am terribly impressed with.

I cut out a bunch of this message, I lost my train of thought somewhere
around here. If you want a good gaming OS, get an XBox 360 or a Wii.
(Wii60!)
