I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. I use a VPN client
to connect to the network at work. My problem is, when I
do not type for about five minutes, my VPN is
disconnected. I'm having the same problem with Remote
Desktop. Someone told me that there is a firewall
setting in XP that needs to be adjusted, but I'm having
trouble finding this.

thanks,

Kim

Do you have the firewall enabled? The firewall in XP is ICF (Internet
Connection Firewall) and can be found by opening up the network connections
folder, right clicking the LAN or dial up interface, going to properties,
Advanced. There is a check box for ICF. If this is not checked, then your
firewall is not on.

Also note that many servers will disconnect you after a configurable amount
of idle time. The firewall in XP does not have a feature like this, so it
is something else you are running into.
