Disappearing DVD Drive

I have installed a Sony DVD drive into a computer. It is
running Windows Xp Home. The system BOIS finds the drive
when it boots up with no problem. Windows however does
not. It only finds it when I update the hardware listing
or install new hardware and automatically installs the
correct driver. After this point the drive works great
and is always listed. Then when the computer is shutdown
or is rebooted the drive disappears in windows until it
is manually searched for new hardware again. Can anyone
give me an answer to resolve this problem?
 
Try removing the ide drive controller for that device in DEVICE MANAGER and
then rebooting. XP should then discover the controller and the attached
drive.
