Edna, I solved the problem!

Take a look at Keith Miller's points again, sent by Ramesh:

Additional note, from Keith Miller:

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) 'System Properties' -> 'Advanced' tab -> Performance 'Settings' ->
'Visual Effects' tab:
"use drop shadows for icon labels..." must be checked

2) Right-click on Desktop -> 'Arrange Icons by' -> "Lock Web items..." must
be CLEARED

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.

To check for web content: Display Properties > Desktop tab > Customize
Desktop button > Web tab >
make sure all checkboxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

I tried this, and all the black patches went away. Thank you, Ramesh, and
Keith Miller!

Click on the Start button
Select Control Panel
Then select Performance and Maintenance/Adjust Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for
icon labels on the Desktop".
Classic - Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings
If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons
By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked

| Under each of my Desktop Icons there's a coloured patch bearing the title.
| Is there a way of making this patch transparent ie just have the titles
| printed on the desktop void of the patch? Thx ...

BillF You're brilliant I've been trying for months to work this one out I thought it was just another Windows glitch. Thanks a lot.
