If MS didn't know anything about it before, they did as of this this
morning. At this point I don't know what will fix it, but yes, once they
identify the cause it will likely be fixed.
Does going offline, waiting a couple of min then taking outlook back
online
get it kick started?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=967688 is the patch that seemed to fix
it
before - but this should be in the SP2 release.

Thanks for answering.
The SP2 installed is that described in the Article ID:953195.
I agree with referenced comments.
Do you think there is some turnaround I may apply ?
Do you think MS is aware of this problem and will take care of it ?
XP Pro Control Panel gives no possibility to unistall the SP2.
Thanks
Manlio
Some have reported problems with the pre-sp2 CU - they needed to
install a
second update to make it work. That second update should be part of SP2
tho.
One person told me if there is no new mail upon opening Outlook, the
desktop
alert will display
any new mail AFTER that initial check of mail on startup. If there is
new
mail downloaded when outlook initially starts, the alert doesn't
display.
(Outlook also takes longer to close completely when the alerts aren't
working.)
