everything in the previous threads, but I am in the update "loop".

Thanks for try plun - didn't work for me on either computer. Guess I should
just relax and accept it for what it is - Beta - lol.

Yes it works, also tested Dial-a-fix, Softwaredistribution flush
within a swedish forum with succes ;)

Windows Update says update was successful. However Defender keeps
1.14.1288.5 every time. Manual update indicates success, but Defender stays
at 1.14.1288.5?????????????????
 
Tried it several times, plun - just won't work for me. Never had this
problem before on either pc. Update is successful, but definitions don't
update on Defender. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Defender - even
worse - am tired of Restoring System - will just forget Defender for a while
until someone at Microsoft realizes there is a problem with this on some
computers. Thanks
 
Same problem here. Fix 915015 (which used to work, now reports error 1316 A
network error occurred while attempting to read from the file
C\Windows\Installer\AS_sigs.msi
Not surprising as that file dies not appear to be there.

Also tried Add/remove/change, install. No dice.

If you meant Windows installer 3.1 v2, I already had that. Anyway,
reinstalled it with AV turned off (it just created a restore point then
finished in a blink of an eye, suggesting that it did not have to update
anything).

But WD will still not update, fix 915015 still returns error 1316 and I
cannot get beyond 1288.5.
 
Should have added, also tried dial a fix, repair Windows installer.

I the light of what JohnBurns stated I'm loth to try a complete
uninstall/reinstall.

Wghat really bugs me is that both Microsoft updates and check for updates
report successful update, whilst event log shows failed.

This is getting beyond a joke. So far I have only had one update install
first time, the others installed after fix 915015, now this one won't even do
that.
This should get top priority with the deveoper team: if the product can't
be updated (but claims that it is updated, it is worse than useless, it is a
positive danger.
 
As a final thow, I used Windows installer cleanup utility to remove the
updates. SUCCESS, in WD, check for updates installed 1.14.1314.1. Event log
also shows successful update.

But my grumble still stands: this updating should be fixed ASAP.

Do you have this file ?

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log

Can you see WDs synchronisation within the log file ?

Also what dates within:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender\DefinitionUpdates

Or is it empy ?

There are 4 folder's within the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\WindowsDefender\DefinitionUpdates.. folder.
One of the 4 is "updates". Is it supposed to be empty? Mine is.
Besides the that there is "Backup" "Default" & {43AB9A03-74AD-43B2B16-
5DEECDEE1E3C} - which is 3.99MB in size. Is this as it all should be?
